Mom Gives Away Toddler for $2000

Rosemary Stokes Busch, 23, gave her two-year-old daughter, Savannah Stokes, to 60-year-old Nicholas Stokes (who is allegedly related to Savannah’s father) after Stokes (Nicholas, not Savannah) gave Stokes Busch $2000 (which Stokes Busch said was back child support due to her from Savannah’s father, who is not Nicholas Stokes). Are you following? Good.

Stokes was (allegedly) supposed to take Savannah to her father in California but he only made it as far as his home in St. Louis, with the girl. Hey, I know how hard it is to travel with a toddler. Maybe she asked for one too many viewings of Boobah. Anyway, Nicholas Stokes (allegedly) didn’t realize that handing over cash for a kid who may or may not be related to him (the police still aren’t clear on the relationship, if any) might seem a little fishy. He also (allegedly) didn’t know anyone was worried about Savannah.

That’s fair. I mean, Stokes Busch (the mom, remember?) just took the cash and ran, sans child. I can sort of see how Stokes (Nicholas, not Savannah) would be confused. Stokes did turn himself and Savannah over to the police, voluntarily, after he learned that she was reported missing. Stokes (again; Nicholas, not Savannah) is being held on kidnapping charges. Stokes Busch is on probation from previous convictions and is currently facing drug charges. A county grand jury will decide if she should face charges in her daughter’s case. I certainly hope she does.
