Let’s see…who’s up today on our constant parade of parental miscreants? Ah, yes, here’s a lovely specimen. And yet, while it’s a horrible story, there’s also a story of love and tenderness wrapped inside of it.
That love and tenderness doesn’t come from Michael P. Burke of Colorado Springs, Colorado, though. This bastard was already up on misdemeanor child abuse charges for DWI-ing around town with his two young girls in the car. But that was nothing compared to what happened next. Burke has admitted to at least one investigator that he poured boiling water into his 9-year-old daughter’s bath and forced her to sit in it for 30 minutes while she screamed, “It’s going to kill me!” The “loving father” then forced her to lay on the floor for 30 minutes, and pushed her head down with his foot when she tried to get up. When her 12-year-old sister tried to call the cops, Burke kicked his older daughter so hard that it left a womping bruise.
Burke told the investigator that he “lost it”. No, Mr. Burke. You didn’t “lose it”. You took 10 to 15 minutes to boil two pots of large water on a stove before dumping them into your little girl’s bath. When she screamed in pain and terror, you held her in and let the water tear away at her flesh. Your act was cold and premeditated. You’re a sadistic fuck who delights in controlling and torturing other people. Striking a child once, out of anger? That’s “losing it”. Subjecting a 9-year-old to an hour of torture? That’s the mark of a depraved human being.
Where in God’s name does the “love and tenderness” come in here? It comes from Burke’s ex-girlfriend, who fled this tyrannical dad after he allegedly slashed the tires of her car. Concerned for the safety of the girls, she stopped by their mobile home, where the two told her what had gone down. The girls had tried to call police, but Burke had stopped them. The ex then devised a plan to get Burke out of the mobile home long enough for the girls to run to the club house at the trailer park and dial 911.
Goddess knows what would’ve happened to those girls if this woman, who wasn’t even a blood relation, hadn’t been concerned enough to keep tabs on their well-being. She showed more love toward these two in this one incident than their own father likely ever has in their entire lives. The thought of those two children being subjected to that savagery sickens me.
Michael P. Burke faces up to 12 years in prison. But, hey – let’s just put him in a bathtub of boiling water for an hour and call it even. Whaddya say, prosecutors?
