British Couple Kate and Gerry McCann Named as Suspects in Daughter’s Death

Joel

kate-and-gerry-mccann.jpgWe’re all familiar with the tragic story of the British couple, Drs. Kate and Gerry McCann, whose four-year-old daughter Madeline was taken from her room last May during a family vacation in Portugal.

Madeline was sleeping in an unlocked apartment with her two-year-old siblings while her parents ate dinner with friends 100 yards away.The McCanns left the kids unattended, but took turns checking on them. They told police that at about 9 p.m., Kate McCann returned to find an open bedroom window and Madeline missing. (Local media have published detailed accounts of the evening.)

On Friday, Portuguese police told the McCanns that they were suspects. Seems that a new round of tests conducted by a British lab showed that traces of Madeline’s blood, saliva and hair were found in the apartment. This suggests that she was killed there and not abducted. Also, British cadaver-sniffing dogs detected signs of a past presence of a dead body in the apartment.

Traces of Madeleine’s blood were also found in the trunk of a car rented by the McCanns after Madeline’s disappearance and dogs detected the scent of a corpse on the car’s keys.

Portuguese investigators believe that Kate McCann accidentally killed her daughter by giving her a sedative overdose. Supposedly, Kate gave her daughter medicine so that she would sleep while the parents ate dinner. Kate then supposedly hid the body with her husband’s help and staged the public pleas as a cover up. Of course, everyone’s outraged and the Portuguese police are accused of trying to cover up a bungled investigation.

However, it’s beginning to sound to me like the JonBenet Ramsey story. Like that little girl’s death, we’ll probably never find out what truly happend to Madeline McCann.

    Hi Kathy , Hope all is well. Iread your post on the open thread. Here is the latest on the farcical Mccanns.

    Sky News: “Madeleine McCann Hunt Leads To Australia”

    The search for Madeleine McCann is focusing on Australia after a woman told police she knew the Victoria Beckham lookalike being sought by detectives… A spokesman for the New South Wales Police Force said: “A Sydney woman provided a formal statement to detectives at a Sydney police station. She claims to know the identity of the woman being sought by the private investigators attached to the McCann family.”

    So it’s those private cops chasing the Maddie suspect? And what of this suspect spotter’s motives?

    Daily Mirror: “’MADDIE YACHT’ FOUND: OWNER’S WORTH £250M & CALLS HUNT LUDICROUS”

    Frank Thorne; Justin Penrose have breaking news of the Our Maddie hunt:

    Madeleine McCann detectives aim to interview a millionairess after a yacht at the centre of the inquiry into the child’s disappearance was traced. Melissa Karlson’s mother owns the £6million vessel that docked in Barcelona hours before a mystery woman asked a British tourist: “Are you here to deliver my new daughter?” But the family of the 31-year old Australian, daughter of £250million socialite Rhonda Wyllie, 52, yesterday told the Sunday Mirror any suggestion the vessel was involved with the abduction or the mystery woman was “ludicrous“.

    And so another innocent party is dragged into the story of the missing child.

    And even with no proof of any wrongdoing, with no proof of any crime, nor indeed a shred of evidence linking innocent Melissa Karlson or her family to Madeleine McCann, the Mirror can still write:

    The team hunting three year-old Madeleine had believed that the mystery powerboat could provide a breakthrough… The luxury Sunseeker vessel, called Will Power, was reportedly the only vessel out of nine unaccounted for by Maddie investigators. It was moored in Barcelona from 12.40pm on May 6, 2007, and left on the 9th for an unknown destination. Investigators are keen to speak to Mrs Karlson, who runs her mother’s investment group, and Mrs Wyllie to rule them out.

    Only, the innocent Mrs Karlson does not have to speak with private detectives working on a “vague” tip off. Really, she doesn’t.

    A source close to the investigation told the Sunday Mirror: “We have been told about the daughter of the owner of this boat and are aware of who she is. We understand she’s currently in Perth, Australia, and will be keen to speak to her to eliminate her from our inquiries.”
    The source seems to be in Team McCann. And off to Oz the private detectives will surely go…

    Wyllie Group company director Craig Coleman, speaking on behalf of Mrs Karlson, said from his home in Perth: “This is the most ridiculous speculation I have ever heard. It’s ludicrous.”

    Ludicrous, indeed. And in keeping with two years of the Hunt for Our Maddie. And shameful that the McCanns – those victims of the most horrendous libel – should be linked to another innocent party having their good name sullied in public.

    Sunday Express: “SOCIALITE AT CENTRE OF MADDY MYSTERY”

    A MULTI-MILLIONAIRESS could be interviewed byMadeleine McCann investigators this week over the movements of her luxury motor cruiser The Australian socialite, who is believed to be aboard the £5million yacht this weekend, cruising in the Mediterranean, is aware that she has become embroiled in the international hunt for Madeleine.
    The boat is only worth £5million now. That’s the recession for you. And as for the innocent woman being made aware of her being “embroiled” in a child’s disappearance… Well, yes – someone gave her name to the press.

    Clarence Mitchell, spokesman for Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, said: “Since the appeal on Thursday investigators have had more than 600 pieces of information come into the inquiry via e-mail and telephone calls. “Among it all are a number of viable leads, all of which are being assessed and prioritised as necessary.”

    And an innocent woman’s name made known via the papers.

    Daily Express: “MADDY’S MOTHER PHOTOGRAPHED BOAT SHE BELIEVES SNATCHED GIRL”

    KATE McCANN went to see a boat she believes was used in the abduction of their daughter, the Sunday Express can reveal today. Just a few days after Madeleine was snatched from the family’s holiday apartment, a family friend had a “strong vision” that the child was on a boat moored in a nearby marina.

    We have already learnt that the Our Maddie boat was in Barcelona three days after the child vanished. Now we learn that Kate McCann was looking at the boat in Lagos – “a few miles along the coast from Praia da Luz where he daughted vanished” – a few days after her daughter vanished.

    The note, headed “information from the family” and apparently from an officer with the Leicestershire Police as it was written on the force’s notepaper, reads: “I spoke to Kate McCann on Tuesday 8th May 2007. She told me that a friend of her aunt and uncle had a friend that had a strong vision that Madeleine was on a boat with a man in the marina in Lagos… “They have visited the marina and identified the boat.” The officer spoke to a colleague who made some enquiries about the cruiser, which was registered to a Canadian national. Enquiries were also made on the police national computer. The note goes on: “I spoke with Kate today and she has given me ¬photographs of the boat. She has also given me photograph of a man who had been on the boat. This is not the man that the woman saw in her vision. This matter is very important to her and she is very pleased that we are making enqs (enquiries) into the matter.”

    Canada? Come in, Canada…

    NOTW: “Oz ‘Posh’ denies link to Maddie – ‘Suspect’, 53, wasn’t in Portugal at time”

    Writes Dominic Herbert:

    A VICTORIA BECKHAM lookalike named in the Madeleine McCann case was tracked down yesterday and insisted: “I have nothing to do with her disappearance.”

    Meet Judith Aron is the NOTW’s “Posh double.” Warning: Victoria Beckham may care to look away now lest she made depressed…

    But unlike pop star Posh Spice, 35, she is FIFTY-THREE. Miss Aron also insists she has not left her native Australia since 2000. The dramatic twist in the case came when Nelida Martinez from Sydney recognised the e-fit and went to police with a photo of Miss Aron. It is believed the pic was taken on a flight from Portugal to Spain in 1997. Reporters in Australia got wind of the story and tracked down Miss Aron to Melbourne where, bizarrely, she lives in Madeline Street. And she “has a fair-haired daughter around the age Maddie”.

    What more evidence do you need? Says Miss Aron:

    “I’m 53 and I certainly don’t look like a Spice Girl. I can honestly say I have no connection to the little girl. I haven’t left Australia since 2000 and I was looking after my elderly father so I wasn’t able to go overseas.”

    Herald Sun: “Melbourne woman denies missing Madeleine McCann link”

    In a bizarre twist Melbourne woman Judith Aron who lives in Madeline St, Glen Iris, was forced to deny she or her fair-haired five-year-old god-daughter had anything to do with the missing girl after she was reported to Sydney police… “Abducting kids is sickening,” she said.

    Naming names in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann – it could be you next..

    IRONSIDE, I haven’t had a moment to get back to you, busy weekend. But more interesting yet absurd readings, the “Victoria Beckham” lookalike was posed just that way as to attract attention to the story which was just an absurd red herring. OF COURSE, this woman wasn’t “the” woman, there is no other woman, man, or entity who took or murdered Maddie. Just Mom & Dad McCann, and with a little help from their friends. I am of the belief that there is a God and He IS JUST. Here is a biblical promise to meditate on if you like “You can be SURE YOU’RE sin will find YOU out”. I believe that, even Hitler was “found out” at that last moments before his death.

    I like the verse that says “If thine eye offend thee, pluck it out….” These murdering scumbags offend me IMMENSELY, so I really think that the law should be able to “pluck them out”. Or, I could volunteer to help….

    Found an interesting connection…

    Two Fists One Heart…a movie from Australia recieved rave reviews from all but one newspaper Murdochs…Why would this be when it is reported to be the best movie in a long time to come out of Perth…Could it be that….

    Arts Minister Sheila McHale refused David Elfick the backing for his movie…Rhonda Wyllie stepped in and held a lavish soiree at her home raising 4 million towards making the film..

    Sheila McHale works closely with Fox Studios backed by Rupert Murdoch.

    Again Murdoch likes to be in control…only a handful of movies are made in Australia a year…usually backed by him.

    Is Murdoch upset with the Wyllie’s ? Rhonda Wyllies stepson plays a cameo and he is not mentioned either.

    The rave reviews were on MARCH 4TH 2009…

    Melissa Wyllie was involved in a big charity event for Murdoch three years ago.

    Now the Wyllies are involved again in Murdochs newspapers but this time for a much more sinister reason….Madeleine Mccann…The Wyllies are good stock they have more money than any one could dream of. The most Rhonda has done in her amazing life is to be charged with speeding….I hardly think she would have ever given the mccanns a second thought ..until now that is…now that her name has been spread across tabloids telling the gullible people that she could be involved with the abduction of madeleine mccann…Murdochs little golden nugget… Coincidence?

    xxxxxxx

    Now where may all this lead..well folks in the movie business ‘were so impressed by Rhonda’s idea and they are pretty fed up with having to dance to the tune of movie maker ScreenWest…that they have decided to do the same….have fund raisers and let outsiders participate in making their movies.

    Around 13 movies a year come from Australia and Murdoch is the backer through Fox….

    Now if Directors and Producers can get their own backers they no longer need Murdoch. This will not please murdoch .

    Rhonda Wyllie what have you done….

    I se this morning Rhonda has been cleared of all connection to the Mccann case……

    Lets not also forget that Clarence Mitchel works for Murdochs son in Law….The Wylles are one of the richest people in Australia. Yet Murdoch still let this farce go ahead in his newspapers…(he now owns more than 100) knowing full well the Wyllies would not be involved in the Mccann case.

    Makes you think…just who is running the show??????and it is a show.

    IRONSIDE, haven’t spoken online in a while, hope all is well with you. Madeleine MaCann was by no means off of my mind. I clicked on the link from your post of 8-10-9 and was so captivated, to say the least. Many blatant oversights, etc., the most stunning of which are the “48 questions
    Kate McCann refused to answer”. There were many other dubious points, as Philemonia, the Aunt’s gaffs, the so-called reasons the McCann’s had to leave Portugal, and so on and so forth. I have not digested the entire site yet, but intend to. I was wondering if, in your interest and research, you had found any new developments?
    Please keep me apprised, and I will do the same.
    Best Regards.

    Couple defend Madeleine leaflet

    A NOTTS couple who delivered leaflets in Clifton about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have defended their actions.

    Grenville Green and his wife, Helene Davies-Green, have been campaigning on behalf of the Madeleine Foundation.

    The pressure group has repeatedly claimed Madeleine was not abducted and their leaflet presents evidence gathered by the Portuguese police about her disappearance.

    The pensioners from Nuthall have also dropped leaflets in Rothley, Leicestershire, the village where the McCanns live.

    Mrs Davies-Green said: “We’re not trying to upset anyone or stir anything up, we just want people to look again at the case.”

    Leaflets about Kate and Gerry McCann posted in Rothley were taken down by neighbours.

    Following the leaflet drop, Mr and Mrs McCann issued a statement through their spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, in which they said: “We do not wish to dignify the actions of the Madeleine Foundation with any response at all.”*

    *(yet they did, in their own official site and via their spokesman, Clarence Mitchell)

    in This is Nottingham

    Madeleine Foundation supporter Grenville Green, from Nottingham, taking news of the booklet: ‘What Really Happened to Madeleine McCann?’ to residents and shopkeepers in Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire.

    After reading the booklet over the Christmas holidays, and being convinced that Madeleine McCann was not abducted as the McCanns have claimed, Grenville bought 100 booklets from the Madeleine Foundation. He has been touring Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire on his Triumph Bonneville America bike to promote the booklet. Amongst the places he has visited have been Leicestershire Police Headquarters and the McCanns’ home village of Rothley.

    Grenville said: “My wife and I have had a very good response wherever we’ve been. Most people appear to doubt the McCanns’ version of events and have eagerly snapped up the booklet. I am amazed at the amount of government help that this couple has had, given that the Portuguese police had good grounds for making them suspects in the disappearance of their own daughter”.

    Biography: Grenville Green (59) was widowed and brought up three boys, including his Downs Syndrome son Stephen, on his own. He remarried in May last year and currently campaigns for carers’ rights. In particular he is asking that the Carers’ Allowance, paid by the government to full-time carers, should be increased to the same level as the national minimum wage.

    IRONSIDE, since I am not familiar with British Law processes, can you brief me on the signifignce of Gerry and Kate McCann’s refusal to allow reconsitution? It sounds like it is not in their favour…. Also, you probably know that your comment of Joana Morias blog followed mine, in that I was questioning the 30 minutes vs. the 30 seconds. What a disparity! So glad to hear things are heating up, Kate just looks so weary and guilty. This kind of thing must be taxing on a person after a while. I am still studying……

  • IRONSIDE Says:

    Hi Kathy, it was the portuguese who wanted a reconstruction. The Mccanns and their friends refused to return for this. Portuguese PJ can not force them to return ,the fact that they did not makes them look as though they have something to hide. This is still a portuguese case. Now the fund is another matter ,the fund was set up in England..I am going to post you something Amaral said in his book which may help…

  • IRONSIDE Says:

    Amarals Quote….

    FRAUD OR ABUSE OF TRUST?

    During a more relaxed moment at one of these meetings, I come out with an ill-judged comment. Inopportune or undiplomatic, but this is my reasoning: thinking about the kinds of crime that may have been committed if the McCanns were involved in their daughter’s disappearance, something occurs to me. If they were involved in one way or another, then a crime of fraud or abuse of trust is a possibility concerning the fund that was set up to finance the search for Madeleine. Donations have reached nearly 3 million Euros.

    If such a crime exists, Portugal would not have jurisdiction to investigate and try it. The fund being legally registered in England, it would be our English colleagues who would deal with the case. Our English colleagues then realise a hard reality: the strong possibility that they would have a crime to investigate in their own country, with the McCAnn couple as the main suspects: a prospect that does not seem to appeal to them. I notice a sudden pallor in the faces of those British people present.

    xxxxxxxxx

    Kathy anything you wish to know on Portuguese law Joana will be happy to assist you..Hope you and your family have had a good weekend. Keep posting on Joanas site , every post counts…

  • Kathy Thomas Says:

    IRONSIDE, thank you for the correction. I think that Goncolo Amaral has a highly brilliant and investigative mind, not to mention so very articulate. He is surely the correct person for this heavy task…no wonder the Brits/Pj.s dismissed him. He was just too close to finding out the truth. And now, he still is. I don’t think it will be much longer. I don’t think Kate can handle much more of this. Signs of wear are showing on her face.

  • Kathy Thomas Says:

    IRONSIDE and yes, the British Authorities would be hard-pressed not to prosecute the McCann’s in the case of the fund/fraud. One thing leads to another, just like in the investigation, so it will be in the prosecution and solution.

  • IRONSIDE Says:

    Hi Kathy, There is more evidence that was not released in the PJ files, this was held back for a reason. For the re openeing of the case. Hopefully one day some evidence will be produced this time strong enough to charge the mccanns.

  • Kathy Thomas Says:

    Will do! Thanks for all of the info…I reread the first post of this thread and it just about says it all.

  • IRONSIDE Says:

    Hi Kathy, do see the latest..the mccanns are delighted and filled with hope that Jaycee has been found after 18 years. You will now see how the mccanns work’ they hi jack any abduction and link it to themselves. They would rather madeleine be raped and abused for the next 16 years …no mention from the mccanns of what Jaycee has been through while with this monster they just think of themselves and how they can keep money pouring in to their fraudulent fund.

  • Kathy Thomas Says:

    Hi IRONSIDE, I would like to contribute this about Jaycee Lee Dugard. She was aducted from my own small town in 1991. (So. Lake Tahoe), she was in my only daughter’s Girl Scout Troop, I not only knew her, but also her mother Terry Probyn. As a result of this, as a small community we were “rocked” by the event. So hearing of this twist by the McCann’s causes me to feel especially indignant towards them. The events that led up to Jaycee’s abduction were NOTHING like the events that surrounded Madeleine’s dissappearance.
    -Firstly, she was followed by the couple, the Garrido’s for a couple of weekends to the Probyn’s home because they had their eyes on Jaycee, and wanted to “case” the physicality of the possible abduction. The Probyn’s reported that to the SLTPD at that time.
    -The Garridos went to some of the weekend events that are common place in that area, arts’n craft shows, outdoor bands etc. They were and are prevailent in that area.
    -When they spotted Jaycee for the first time, the followed the Probyn’s home at least 2 times to the Probyn’s knowledge.
    -With the knowledge in hand that she lived on a very steep decline of a culdesac, and noticing that Carl Probyn worked in the garage about a hundred feet from the bus stop, and that Terry Probyn took the only family car to work for the City of SLT, they then surmised that they had the perfect setting for an abduction, and indeed it was.
    -On the corner of Washoan and Pioneer Bl.
    when drove up to the Bus Stop, they pulled her in within 4-5 seconds, Jaycee screamed, Carl Probyn got on his bike, but had to climp a steep incline to reach Pioneer Bl., and simply wasn’t pysically able to keep up with them.
    -Carl them immediately went back home to call 911, ( he already had shouted out the the neighbors to do so )
    -Immediately the SLT Police Dept., put out an APB based on the vehicle description, Calif. Highway Patrol closed off all exits leaving So. Lake Tahoe, which are few. But by the time the Gariddos hit Pioneer Trail, all they had to do was go left on Hwy. 50 and withing 15 minutes they were “home free”. This in part due to Carl Probyn’s frantic response and therefore the delay in calling 911.
    -The town was cut off for over a day from incoming and outgoing traffic. At all of the exit roads, each and every vehicle was stopped and inspected, and of course, a flyer with the details was being prepared with the car description, eyewitness renderings of the couple that Carl saw driving the vehicle, and we, as well as the remainder of the community were in shock, participated in the search, and distributed not only the flyers, but tied pink ribbons EVERYWHERE as well as wore them, (this was prior to the pink ribbon was designated as the Breast Cancer ribbon) and this continued on for months.
    -As winter set in, and the winters in So. Lake Tahoe are harsh to say the least, (almost 8000′ altitude) the ribbons everywhere faded, yet there was still hope.
    -My church at that time put Jaycee on the top of their prayer list and was still, as of last Sunday, continuted to keep her at the top of their prayer list.
    -As a direct result of this tragedy, Terry and Carl Probyn divorced about 2 years later. Their marriage could not take the toll of the grief, etc.
    So as I lay out these simple, but not complete facts about the Jaycee Lee Dugard abduction, anyone can compare these facts to the Madeleine McCann facts and see that there are NO similarities. The Probyn’s did start a bank fund, but it was used exclusively for flyers and rescue efforts only. They did not and could not assume their previous lives, the grief was too overwhelming. Carl Probyn was a suspect for a brief time, yet he cooperated with the authorities. Their recollection of the prior tailings of the couple from previous weekend outings, etc., were revealed with the authorities as was anything that was necessary. They had personal psychological, emotional, and financial problems. They did not resume any form of normalcy, which to me, would be the normal reaction, as opposed the the McCann’s who went back home “because the lease on their Villa” was up, there was NO evidence of any kind, as opposed to the McCanns, and nothing in Jaycee’s nor the Probyns personal lives indicated anything suspect. SIMPLY PUT, NO EVIDENCE.
    So my point has been obvious, the handling, attitudes, and the manner prior to and after the abduction was 180 degrees away from the way the McCanns have handled Madeleine’s dissappearance. There are no correlations, similarities, nor public questioning that took place and is STILL taking place with the McCanns.
    For the McCanns to use Jaycee’s return as a platform for their “innocence” is nothing short of despicable. They know they are criminals and there are huge amounts of contradictions in their stories as compared to the Dugard/Probyn’s tragedy. Jaycee’s was obviously miraculous, and by ALL law enforcment standards, a zillion to one. Madelein’s situation doesn’t even allow for those possibilities. Again, just the polar opposite. What an insult to Madeleine, Jaycee, and the Probyns to even attempt paralelling the two non like experiences. Now the McCanns are reaching an even lower level than they were already on!
    -

  • Kathy Thomas Says:

    It must also be mentioned that in the So. Lake Tahoe Tribune, yesterday’s edition, that Jaycee was hours away from being killed and dumped somewhere, because of the eyewitness’ sighting of Garrido’s behavior with the two small children on the UCBerkeley’s campus, while handling out flyers. He was terrified and had every intention of going home and ridding himself othe the evidence, Jaycee. But the authorities got to him before it happened. Also, very noteworthly, the Contra Costa law enforcement is investigating the murders of several young women who were found in the same grounds as where Garrido worked in the ’90s! He had a sexual offender past, was released in 1989, and went back into prision from 1992-1993, and yet, because of the layout of the “compound” at his home, Jaycee and the two small children were never located. Garrido’s declaration of his love of “mind control” explains much, as well does his criminal background. We will wait to see if she murdered women found on his workplace have a connection to Garrido.
    FROM ONE WHO WAS THERE.

  • IRONSIDE Says:

    Hi Kathy thanks for the inside info. I am following the case on the In.Session Boards they seem to be up to date with links and videos, unless you can suggest another blog site I can follow. The Mccanns are terrified of the Cadaver dogs evidence and I think I read that dogs are being brought in to check his land because of the connection with the death of prostitutes.

    I also read that two years ago a neighbor named Erica Pratt saw two little 4 year old girls with Jaycees children when she looked over the garden wall. Have you any news of these two children who would be about 6 years old now.?

    Please keep me informed of anything you hear. The Mccanns offered to take a lie detector test to prove their innocence but when someone came forward and offered them the opportunity to take one they refused.

    Gonçalo Amaral’s book prohibited from sale (Joana Morais)

    Source: Joana Morais
    Original Sol article by Ana Paula Azevedo

    The 13th Section of the Civil Court of Lisbon has today conceded the injunction that had been presented by the McCann couple, the parents of Maddie – who disappeared in Praia da Luz in May 2007 – in the sense of prohibiting the sale of the book by Gonçalo Amaral, the former Polícia Judiciária inspector who defends the thesis that the parents were responsible over the disappearance and death of the child.

    The book, Maddie – The Truth about the Lie – cannot be sold as of today, and all copies that are in shops or in storage must be collected.

    The court has further decided to sustain the McCann couple’s request to prohibit the distribution of the movie that is based on the same book, and was broadcast by TVI.

    The court demands Valentim de Carvalho and Guerra e Paz to collect all of the books that are still on sale in bookshops, forbidding them of ceding the rights of exhibition of the video and of sale of the book into other countries.

    According to the same decision, the editors are not allowed to publish this or other books or videos that defend the same thesis.

    Finally, it forbids Gonçalo Amaral to make any statements about the contents of the book or the video.

    Hi Kathy…comment from Amaral…this man has cojones….

    by Gonçalo Amaral

    In the book ‘The truth about the lie’ I spoke about the manner in which an investigation can be manipulated and deviated from its main goal: the discovery of truth and the performance of justice. In that case, it would be easy: just replace the coordinating policeman.

    Nevertheless, just like the ‘Golden Whistle’ investigation, nobody cared about the danger for the independence of a criminal investigation. With the ‘Freeport’ case, things were more delicate, the people who needed to be replaced were not mere civil servants, policemen, anymore, but rather illustrious Public Ministry Prosecutors. That was when nearly ‘all hell broke loose’ (it’s still threatening to) and leading personalities in this country alerted to the danger.

    Today, I was notified about a judicial decision that will forbid me from expressing my opinion about the ‘Maddie’ case investigation, in which I was a policeman, in written or oral form. I will be forbidden from exercising my freedom of expression, yet being a mere citizen and a common former policeman, we will have to wait for the ‘Casa Pia’, the ‘Golden Whistle’ and the ‘Freeport’ cases for ‘all hell to break loose’ for good. But the times when people couldn’t speak up is long gone and there cannot be class differences as far as rights, freedoms and guarantees are concerned. And I’m not shutting up.

    Marina, aged 8, found dead after false abduction alert

    AFP — 11.09.2009 | 15:12

    The body of a 8 years old girl, who died a month ago but whose parents had invented a scenario of abduction, was found on Friday by the French gendarmerie at Le Mans after 24 hours of research, according to a judicial source.

    The father confessed in police custody having invented the story of abduction, said the prosecutor Joelle Rieutort.

    “He confessed after the police pointed contradictions” and “fairly quickly said the abduction was a fake” she said to reporters.

    Both parents were placed in custody.

    The body of the little girl was found after her father’s confession in a container in a warehouse belonging to the company where he works.

    In custody, he ensured that the girl died in the first days of August of “natural death”, he said his body had been kept in a freezer at the couple’s previous home, says Ms. Rieutort.

    “The autopsy will be conducted as soon as possible. There are no apparent signs of violence,” she said.

    The father alerted police Wednesday on the alleged disappearance of the girl. He claimed that he briefly left the child alone, asleep in his car on a fast food restaurant parking, just the time to pick up food with his 10 years old son.

    Nearly 150 policemen were mobilized on Thursday and have been looking for the little girl.

    Updates from the Find Madeleine site: Mr Amaral’s Book & dvd banned by court order

    ” We are pleased with the Judge’s decision today preventing further distribution and sale of Mr Amaral’s book and dvd -’The Truth of the Lie’.

    Mr. Amaral’s central thesis has no evidence whatsoever to support it. To claim as he did, that Madeleine is dead, and that we, her parents, were in some way involved with her disappearance, has caused our family incredible distress and it continues to do so.

    Without doubt, Madeleine will have suffered as a result of the negative effect this book and dvd will have had on the search for her.

    Sean and Amelie need protection too from such awful claims.

    Hopefully this injunction today will go a long way towards reducing further unnecessary and unjust distress to us all and allow people to concentrate completely on what is important – finding Madeleine.”

    Incongruence 1

    Q – Former inspector Gonçalo Amaral remains convinced of your involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance. Did you read ‘The Truth of the Lie’, the book that he wrote?

    Kate and Gerry – No.

    Kate – Why would I?

    Gerry – I won’t learn anything from reading it.

    Q – Aren’t you curious to know what the book says?

    Kate – What for? It must be nothing but a load of rubbish. It is so secondary… It certainly won’t help to find our daughter. My consolation is that on the cover he calls her Maddie, the name that the media have invented. We never called her anything like that.

    Q – But you do know the theory that Gonçalo Amaral defends: Madeleine accidentally died in the Ocean Club apartment and you concealed the body.

    Gerry – It really is a waste of time. And we need all the time that we can get to analyse the investigation’s documents, which contain a lot of information that we didn’t know about.

    Kate – You just have to cross, loosely, his theory with the process in order to understand that the facts that he reports are not correct.

    Maddie is probably dead, McCanns say

    A spokesman for the parents of missing British toddler Madeleine McCann say they have finally accepted that she is probably dead.

    It is the first time they have publicly expressed their fear.

    The family spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, told reporters that Kate and Gerry McCann are realistic enough to know the likely fate of their daughter.(….)

    Incongruence 3

    A former South African detective with a record of finding missing children was called in by Kate and Gerry McCann. in London Evening Standard

    “I am almost 90% sure Madeleine is dead. There is always the slight possibility that she could be held hostage in one of the houses in the area on my map, but I feel this is very unlikely. If her body had been moved, my equipment would tell me she is no longer there.” (…)

    Krugel has been in regular contact with Madeleine’s parents, who have thanked him for his help. But his appeal for them to turn their attentions to the site to help find her body has not been answered

    Last year, Krugel claimed to have uncovered a “forensic route” from the McCanns’ holiday apartment at the Oceans Club Resort, along paths and roads to a nearby beach. (…)

    The sooner we find Madeleine’s body, the sooner the police can find out who murdered her,” he said.

    Facts from the DVD Process

    - According to a preliminary, not final report, made by the Forensic Science Service (FSS) of Birmingham, England, this cellular material belongs to MADELEINE.

    - Besides the cadaver scent dog strongly alerted to the room where the McCann couple used to sleep.

    - There was also a new strong cadaver scent alert given on KATE’s clothes.

    - There was also a strong cadaver scent alert in the car used by the couple (since May 27th, 2007), along with the human blood detecting dog’s alert to the luggage compartment of that vehicle.

    - The before mentioned FSS’s Interim Report indicated that there are, resulting from the examinations made to the luggage compartment, biological components that may be compatible with the ones of the minor ; however, this test does not definitely show that the traces originated in MADELEINE’s body.

    - The cadaver scent dog, as well as the human blood detecting dog, also gave Alert to the key of the before mentioned vehicle. The Laboratory also confirmed the existence of GERALD McCANN’s DNA in the key. Furthermore, this last Alert was given by the dog’s when the key was placed away from the vehicle and in a place out of sight.

    1. Apartment 5 A, Ocean Club resort, the place from where the little girl disappeared:

    cadaver scent dog:
    *in the couple’s bedroom, in a corner, next to the wardrobe
    *in the living-room, behind the sofa, next to the apartment’s side window;

    human blood detecting dog:
    *in the living-room, behind the sofa, next to the apartment’s side window (exactly in the same place the dead body scent dog gave the alert);

    2. Yard area close to apartment 5 A:
    cadaver scent dog:
    *in one of the flower beds – the trainer commented on the swiftness of the detected scent;

    3. Apartment where the other GROUP members were lodged:
    *NOTHING was detected by any of the dogs;

    4. Current house of the MCCANN couple (at the time the inspection was carried out):
    *NOTHING was found in the house by any of the dogs;

    5. In the village of Luz:
    *NOTHING was detected by any of the dogs;

    6. In the clothes and belongings of the MCCANN family;
    cadaver scent dog:
    *in two pieces of cloth of KATE HEALY
    *in one piece of cloth of the minor MADELEINE
    *Possibly, in the cuddly toy of MADELEINE (the cadaver scent was detected while the cuddly toy was still inside the house where the family stayed at that time).
    *the alert was confirmed outside the house;

    7. In the vehicle used by the MCCANN family;
    cadaver scent dog:
    *alerted to the car key;

    human blood detecting dog;
    *alerted to the car key;
    *alerted to the inside of the car’s luggage compartment;

    8. In the vehicle used by a friend of the family, who was lodged in the same resort for some days at the same time:
    *NOTHING was detected by any of the dogs:

    9. In all vehicles used by the arguido [formal suspect] ROBERT MURAT and by persons close to him:
    *NOTHING was found by any of the dogs.

    (In a total of ten vehicles, the dead body scent dog and the blood scent dog only alerted to the vehicle of the MCCANN family, rented on May 27)(…)

    • Forensic examinations are being carried out to the places and objects marked by the human blood scent dog and to which this dog gave alert.

    • Based on the performance of the dog team, revealing the possibility of the presence of a body in the apartment and in the vehicle used by the MCCANN family, and in order to give GERALD MCCANN and KATE HEALY the chance to have their position in the proceedings safeguarded, they were named arguidos [formal suspects], merely due to the possibility of their involvements with a possible cadaver.

    -The information gathered at the beginning with the family and friends – a GROUP made up of a total of nine adult persons – reveals some disparities and shows that it is necessary to determine with certainty the precise way these facts have occurred.

    -According to the parents and to the other members of the GROUP’s account, they went to have dinner, all of them leaving their children, sleeping, in their own apartments.

    -We are aware that, “a posteriori”, they got together in a meeting where they remembered the rules referring to the continuous supervision of the children while they were having dinner.(….)

    Following the analysis made to the information obtained from the statements, one of the members of the GROUP, JANE TANNER, became very important due to the information she gave: she saw someone, at dinner time, around 09.15 p.m., crossing the street that provides access to the main entrance of the apartment towards ROBERT MURAT’s house, carrying a child.(…)

    - We can also perceive hte lack of a consistent version about the alleged sighting of the man carrying the child in what concerns GERALD MCCANN and JANE TANNER’s statements, as well as in what concerns JEREMY WILKIN’s witness statement, who was in that place, at the mentioned date and time.

    - Even the place where, allegedly, they would have passed by each other is not very well explained by none of them.

    - Since there was an Alert given by the two dogs (dead body scent/blood), behind the sofa of the living room, it was possible to consider that MADELEINE McCANN’s dead body may have been in that place, which originated the gathering of material to be subject to biological examination.(…)

    Subject: Disappearance of Madeleine McCann

    During the course of the ongoing investigation, various personal contacts were made by the undersigned with Kate and Gerald McCann, within my task of serving as communication element between the police and the McCann couple.

    Within this context, the undersigned was present during various “strange“ behaviours by the couple, who gradually began to react in a very negative manner to the increased investigative activity carried out by this police force, especially during the use of the English sniffer dogs for detecting cadaver odour, when more evidence arose in the investigation for the hypothesis of the death of Madeleine McCann.

    Several times, the McCann couple said that the attention of the police should be maintained focussing on the abduction hypothesis, which, in the couple’s opinion, was the only scenario that occurred and that the police should not forget to continue to investigate the suspect Robert Murat.

    Strangely, Kate also made several requests, three months after the disappearance of Madeleine, that the police should take blood, hair and nail tests of Madeleine’s twin siblings, because, as she said, she remembered that on the day of Madeleine’s disappearance, in spite of all the commotion and noise made by the authorities and other persons who were looking for Madeleine in apartment 5ª of the OC, the twins never woke up, having been transported to another apartment, they remained asleep, due to which she now presumes that they were under the effect of some sedative drug that a presumed abductor had administered to the three children in order to be able to abduct Madeleine, a situation which Kate refers to being possible according to what she read in a criminal investigation manual given to her by the British authorities, that would have been the procedure of the abductor in the real case involving abduction, rape and murder of the girl.

    Today, when the undersigned went to the McCann’s temporary residence to notify them of the need to present themselves at the police station to make statements, being able to take their lawyer with them, Kate McCann immediately reacted in a negative manner, making comments such as “what are my parents going to think” and “what is the press going to say when they find out” and that “the Portuguese police is under pressure from the government to finish the investigation quickly”.

    With regard to Gerald McCann, he constantly insisted in giving the undersigned letters and emails that he was receiving, mostly from psychics and mediums, whom he had selected and which mainly contained information without much credibility about the possible whereabouts of Madeleine and her presumed abductor.

    More recently, and even before Kate’s interrogation, during a telephone call between Gerald McCann and the undersigned, he made a reference regarding the investigation, that he was certain that the police did not have any proof that could incriminate them with regard to the death of Madeleine McCann and he said that the police were wasting their time in directing the investigation around the parents.

    This is process 201/07.0GALGS.

    A collection of files from this process has been made public. They tell the official history of an investigation: the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine Beth McCann.

    Madeleine was discovered missing at around 10 p.m. on the 3rd of May 2007, in Praia da Luz, Algarve, Portugal. The investigation that followed her disappearance went through several different phases, but what is most perceptive, to anyone who has had the opportunity to study the process files, is a profound split that occurred on the day that her parents, Drs Kate and Gerry McCann, were made arguidos under the terms of Portuguese law.

    A book has been prohibited in Portugal this week. It has allegedly been censored because its author caused Madeleine, her parents and her siblings, deep distress, apart from damaging the search for the missing child. What apparently lies at the root of this distress and these damages, is the fact that the author states, in no uncertain terms, the following conclusions that he and an entire team of investigators at the Polícia Judiciária reached, after five months of intense investigation:

    “1. The minor, Madeleine McCann, died inside apartment 5A of the Ocean Club, in Vila da Luz, on the evening/night of the 3rd of May, 2007;

    2. An abduction was simulated;

    3. Kate Healy and Gerald McCann are suspected of being involved in the concealment of their daughter’s cadaver;

    4. Death may have resulted from a tragic accident;

    5. There are indications of neglect in the guard and safety of their children.”

    (in: Maddie – The Truth about the Lie, page 214)

    The McCanns are distressed by these conclusions; it is only natural that they are, and nobody can dispute their right to feel that these are deeply unnerving conclusions, that would send any parent into a state of grave depression.

    Nobody can dispute their right to oppose this kind of statement, either. And it would be irresponsible not to respect the decision of an illustrious judge at the Civil Court of Lisbon, who issued an injunction to prevent further publication and sales of the book, in Portugal, as well as the sale of the book’s editing rights anywhere in the world, among other restrictions.

    One may not agree with the secretive manner in which the process was dealt with, or with the decision that was reached, but there are mechanisms at the disposal of the entities that suffered this injunction, and it is only up to them to make use of said mechanisms in an attempt to reverse the judge’s ruling.

    But there is something else.

    There is a process sitting in the archives of the Public Ministry at the court building, in Portimão.

    A process that states, in no uncertain terms as well, that a homicide may have put an end to Madeleine’s existence, and that the likelihood of said homicide is high:

    “Concerning the other indicated crimes [abduction, homicide, concealment of a cadaver], they are only that, and although the occurrence of a homicide cannot be discarded, due to its high degree of probability, it has to remain a supposition due to a lack of sustaining elements in the files.”

    (in: Process 201/07.0GALGS, volume XVII, page 4644)

    The same process considers the possibility that Kate and Gerry McCann may have been involved in their daughter’s death (“Even though, by hypothesis, one might admit that Gerald and Kate McCann might be responsible for the child’s death (…)”), and it states that several witnesses have most probably lied in their statements, breaking the Portuguese Penal Process Code, under article 132, 1-d:

    “Nevertheless, the process files also show that this vigilance [checks on the children], with the periodicity that is mentioned above, was not the one that is alleged in the files, and it remains unexplained why, that night, the checking procedure was altered in the sense of shortening the visit intervals.”

    (in: Process 201/07.0GALGS, volume XVII, page 4641)

    “From the statements of the entire group [the McCann couple and their friends] results a complete incoherence, at the face of which it is easily verified that all of them lie.”

    (in: Process 201/07.0GALGS, volume XVII, page 2589)

    But there are other statements inside this process that any sane person would consider even more distressing, especially when one takes into account what Madeleine’s parents have said, over and over again, live on tape. Here are two examples:

    “Despite everything, until a certain moment in the investigation, the [McCann] family sustained and fed the abduction thesis. Nevertheless, at an uncertain date, the family suggested to consult a person that might, eventually, indicate the probable location of little Madeleine’s cadaver. This fact became inexplicable to the members of the investigation, given the fact that it was the family members themselves who raised the possibility of little Maddie’s death.”

    (in: Process 201/07.0GALGS, volume XVII, page 2594)

    “More recently, before Kate McCann’s questioning [on the 6th/7th of September, 2007], in a telephone contact between Gerald McCann and the signatory [inspector Ricardo Paiva], he [Gerald McCann] mentioned, concerning the investigation, that he was certain that the Police didn’t have any evidence that might incriminate them in the death of Madeleine McCann and said that the police was wasting time by directing the investigation towards the parents.”

    (in: Process 201/07.0GALGS, volume XVII, page 2534)

    It doesn’t really get any more explicit than this:

    “From all that has been exposed, it results from the file that:

    a) Minor Madeleine McCann died in apartment 5A of the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz, on the evening/night of the 3rd of May 2007;

    b) an abduction was simulated;

    c) in order to render the child’s death before 10 p.m. impossible, a situation of checking on the McCann couple’s children, while they slept, was made up;

    d) Kate McCann and Gerald McCann are involved in the concealment of the cadaver of their daughter, Madeleine McCann;

    e) at this moment in time, there seem to be no strong indications yet that the child’s death was not the result of a tragic accident;

    f) from all that has been established up to this moment, everything indicates that the McCann couple, in auto defence, does not want to hand over the cadaver immediately and voluntarily, and that there is a strong possibility that it was moved from its initial location. This situation may raise questions concerning the circumstances under which the child’s death occurred.”

    (in: Process 201/07.0GALGS, volume XVII, page 2601)

    These are the conclusions that were reached by the team of investigators at the Polícia Judiciária, according to an intercalary report by Chief Inspector Tavares de Almeida, on the 10th of September 2007.

    It seems to me that there should have been another request for an injunction, with immediate effect. These conclusions have been distributed by the Public Ministry, on a DVD, and largely published in the Portuguese press, and discussed and commented upon by countless people. Anyone can still request a copy of the process, which contains these highly distressing allegations, at the Public Ministry’s services in Portimão.

    I am certain that everyone will agree that they are at least as unnerving and depressing as those that were published by Gonçalo Amaral in his book.

    But unfortunately, they cannot be dismissed as the deluded, offensive ramblings of a disgraced, disgruntled cop. They are part of the dossier, and they are not denied anywhere in the process.

    Therefore, and until an injunction is issued against Process 201/07.0GALGS, prohibiting anyone from reproducing, commenting upon or discussing these conclusions, we will continue to speak freely about the Portuguese police’s suspicions concerning the Madeleine McCann investigation.

    And we may as well start mentioning a homicide, as a likely hypothesis.

    It’s in the files.

    McCanns Press Release

    Published on Day 21/09/09 [Date used September 13th 2009]

    At the start of August this year, our investigators appealedto the general public for more information following a credible account by a witness. This related to a lady acting suspiciously in Barcelona on the 7th May 2007 in the early hours of the morning. Our investigators received approximately 1000 emails and phone calls following this appeal and have been busy working through this information.* Thank you to everybody who passed information on to our team.We would like to encourage anyone who may still have potentially relevant information to come forward. It is important to note that although the witness thought that the woman in question may have had an Australian accent, it ispossible that this may not be the case.

    At the end of August, we learnt of the discovery of JayceeLee Dugard, 28 years after she was abducted at the age of 11. There was nothing new here for Gerry and me, as we have been told of many cases of missing children who have been found years after they were taken from their families. It is important though, as it emphasises yet again how vital it is to never give up on missing children and how criminal and unjust to assume they are no longer alive. A missing child cannot be expected to find their way home, we need to find them. It is tragic and heartbreaking to think of the life which has been stolen from Jaycee and her family. We hope and pray that they will be able now to find the happiness and peace that they all deserve.

    Last week, a judge in Portugal decided to pass an injunction against Goncalo Amaral’s book and documentary in which he insists that Madeleine is dead and implies that Gerry and I were somehow involved in her disappearance. Nothing can be more soul-destroying for a parent than for somebody to ‘write off’ your missing child (for whatever reason) without any evidence to support such a theory. The anguish and torment that we have suffered as a result of Mr. Amaral’s unfounded claims and actions has been immense, compounding the pain and sadness we feel every day without Madeleinein our lives. Madeleine deserves so much more than treatment like this. She is still missing and we will never give upon her.

    It is important to remember that the good people far outweigh the bad, even though those with cruel intentions can bring you down. Every day we still receive a small bundle of supportive letters to our home and kind messages via the website, as well as positive words from passers-by.Aftera ‘not so good’ day, it is this kindness and solidarity that lifts us up and keeps us going. To those people, we are so grateful and we will never forget the great benefit of simple human kindness.Thank you from all our family.

    Interesting as well to keep for the future memory is this quote from today’s Daily Star on Donal MacIntyre Express article made by the McCann’s Spokesman an unknown source: «The McCanns’ investigators say they are already probing MacIntyre’s findings and agree with most of his theories.»

    Mccanns return to the scene of the crime

    Kate McCann has returned to Portugal for the first time since being quizzed by police over her daughter Madeleine’s disappearance, her spokesman has said.

    “Kate and (her husband) Gerry have gone to Lisbon for a series of meetings with their lawyers and other advisers,” Clarence Mitchell said.

    “They are planning to be there for one day. They are not going to Praia de Luz.”

    Madeleine was three when she went missing in the resort of Praia da Luz in May, 2007.

    Mr Mitchell continued: “It is Kate’s first visit back to Portugal since 2007 and it is difficult.

    “It’s something that has always been daunting for her but she knew she would go back at some stage – and she’s always said she’ll do anything necessary to keep the search for Madeleine alive.

    “If it means a trip to speak to the Portuguese media, then so be it. But she’s always said she’ll do anything to keep the inquiry alive.

    “What keeps her going is a sense of momentum, and important meetings with lawyers and advisers are critical to the campaign.”

    One of the topics to be discussed will be the recent injunction against further publication of a book by former Portuguese police detective Goncalo Amaral.

    Mr Amaral was involved in the initial investigation but was later taken off the case.

    In his book, The Truth of the Lie, he claims that Madeleine is dead and questions the McCanns’ account that she was taken while they were eating with friends nearby.

    Earlier this month a Portuguese judge banned further sale or publication of the book.

    The injunction meant Mr Amaral had to ensure that all unsold copies of the book were removed from shops and warehouses across Europe.

    The injunction also banned him from repeating his claims about Madeleine or her parents.

    At one point, Portuguese police had made Kate and Gerry McCann “arguidos”, or formal suspects, in their daughter’s disappearance.

    They were questioned by detectives but their arguidos status was later lifted.

    More to follow…

    Gonçalo Amaral leaves the Country to Accuse the McCanns

    Forbidden to speak about his version of the Maddie Case, which puts the parents at the origin of the child’s disappearance, the former Inspector gives an interview to TV Record, in Spain.

    Silenced in Portugal, Gonçalo Amaral went to Ayamonte, Spain, to tell again his version of Maddie’s story, exposed in his book «The Truth of the Lie».

    The Former Inspector of the Maddie Case bypassed in this way the injunction that prevents him to speak freely on the thesis of the child’s death and the concealment of the corpse by her parents. However, the daily Press today reveals that the ban to Gonçalo Amaral will be enforced anywhere in the world.[this could only be achieved if the McCanns process Mr. Amaral in every Civil Court of every and each Country, no Court has jurisdiction to forbid a Citizen to speak abroad]

    The McCann were in Lisbon yesterday in a meeting with their lawyers to proceed with the reopening of the inquest* to their daughter’s disappearance and «refresh the searches». The Couple refused to make any comments regarding their conflict with the former PJ inspector.

    Gonçalo Amaral’s interview to TV Record will be broadcast in 70 Countries, the date is still unknown.

    *This is a gross mistake, the McCanns confessed that “they wished to reopen the process”, obviously they won’t even bother to try to reopen the process, which they could as it’s in their legal right as assistants to the process. They could, for example, answer the PJ questions or request that an official reconstruction of the events of 3rd of May 2007 is made. The Public Ministry would no doubt reopen the process to the investigation of Madeleine Beth McCann’ disappearance again.

    Mark Hollingsworth…INVESTIGATES The Mccanns

    Disillusioned with the Portuguese police, Gerry and Kate McCann turned to private detectives to find their missing daughter. Instead the efforts of the private eyes served only to scare off witnesses, waste funds and raise false hopes. Mark Hollingsworth investigates the investigators.

    by Mark Hollingsworth*

    It was billed as a ‘significant development’ in the exhaustive search for Madeleine McCann. At a recent dramatic press conference in London, the lead private investigator David Edgar, a retired Cheshire detective inspector, brandished an E-FIT image of an Australian woman, described her as ‘a bit of a Victoria Beckham lookalike’, and appealed for help in tracing her. The woman was seen ‘looking agitated’ outside a restaurant in Barcelona three days after Madeleine’s disappearance. ‘It is a strong lead’, said Edgar, wearing a pin-stripe suit in front of a bank of cameras and microphones. ‘Madeleine could have been in Barcelona by that point. The fact the conversation took place near the marina could be significant.’

    But within days reporters discovered that the private detectives had failed to make the most basic enquiries before announcing their potential breakthrough. Members of Edgar’s team who visited Barcelona had failed to speak to anyone working at the restaurant near where the agitated woman was seen that night, neglected to ask if the mystery woman had been filmed on CCTV cameras and knew nothing about the arrival of an Australian luxury yacht just after Madeleine vanished.

    The apparent flaws in this latest development were another salutary lesson for Kate and Gerry McCann, who have relied on private investigators after the Portuguese police spent more time falsely suspecting the parents than searching for their daughter. For their relations with private detectives have been frustrating, unhappy and controversial ever since their daughter’s disappearance in May 2007.

    The search has been overseen by the millionaire business Brian Kennedy, 49, who set up Madeleine’s Fund: Leaving No Stone Unturned, which aimed ‘to procure that Madeleine’s abduction is thoroughly investigated’. A straight-talking, tough, burly self-made entrepreneur and rugby fanatic, he grew up in a council flat near Tynecastle in Scotland and was brought up as a Jehovah’s Witness. He started his working life as a window cleaner and by 2007 had acquired a £350 million fortune from double-glazing and home-improvement ventures. Kennedy was outraged by the police insinuations against the McCanns and, though a stranger, worked tirelessly on their behalf. ‘His motivation was sincere,’ said someone who worked closely with him. ‘He was appalled by the Portuguese police, but he also had visions of flying in by helicopter to rescue Madeleine.’

    Kennedy commissioned private detectives to conduct an investigation parallel to the one run by the Portuguese police. But his choice showed how dangerous it is when powerful and wealthy businessmen try to play detective. In September 2007, he hired Metodo 3, an agency based in Barcelona, on a six-month contract and paid it an estimated £50,000 a month. Metodo 3 was hired because of Spain’s ‘language and cultural connection’ with Portugal. ‘If we’d had big-booted Brits or, heaven forbid, Americans, we would have had doors slammed in our faces’ said Clarence Mitchell, spokesperson for the McCann’s at the time. ‘And it’s quite likely that we could have been charged with hindering the investigation as technically it’s illegal in Portugal to undertake a secondary investigation.

    The agency had 35 investigators working on the case in Britain, France, Spain, Portugal and Morocco. A hotline was set up for the public to report sightings and suspicions, and the search focussed on Morocco. But the investigation was dogged by over-confidence and braggadocio. ‘We know who took Madeleine and hope she will be home by Christmas,’ boasted Metodo 3’s flamboyant boss Francisco Marco. But no Madeleine materialised and their contract was not renewed.

    Until now, few details have emerged about the private investigation during those crucial early months, but an investigation by ES shows that key mistakes were made, which in turn made later enquiries far more challenging.

    ES has spoken to several sources close to the private investigations that took place in the first year and discovered that:

    * The involvement of Brian Kennedy and his son Patrick in the operation was counter-productive, notably when they were questioned by the local police for acting suspiciously while attempting a 24-hour ‘stake out’.
    * The relationship between Metodo 3 and the Portuguese police had completely broken down.
    * Key witnesses were questioned far too aggressively, so much so that some of them later refused to talk to the police.
    * Many of the investigators had little experience of the required painstaking forensic detective work.

    By April 2008, nearing the first anniversary of the disappearance, Kennedy and the McCanns were desperate. And so when Henri Exton, a former undercover police officer who worked on M15 operations, and Kevin Halligen, a smooth-talking Irishman who claimed to have worked for covert British government intelligence agency GCHQ, walked through the door, their timing was perfect. Their sales pitch was classic James Bond spook-talk: everything had to be ‘top secret’ and ‘on a need to know basis’. The operation would involve 24-hour alert systems, undercover units, satellite imagery and round-the-clock surveillance teams that would fly in at short notice. This sounded very exiting but, as one source close to the investigation told ES, it was also very expensive and ultimately unsuccessful. ‘The real job at hand was old-fashioned, tedious, forensic police work rather than these boy’s own, glory boy antic,’ he said.

    But Kennedy was impressed by the license-to-spy presentation and Exton and Halligen were hire for a fee of £100,000 per month plus expenses. Ostensibly, the contract was with Halligen’s UK security company, Red Defence International Ltd, and an office was set up in Jermyn Street, in St James’s. Only a tiny group of employees did the painstaking investigative work of dealing with thousands of emails and phone calls. Instead, resources were channelled into undercover operations in paedophile rings and among gypsies throughout Europe, encouraged by Kennedy. A five-man surveillance team was dispatched in Portugal, overseen by the experienced Exton, for six weeks.

    Born in Belgium in 1951, Exton had been a highly effective undercover officer for the Manchester police. A maverick and dynamic figure, he successfully infiltrated gangs of football hooligans in the 1980’s. While not popular among his colleagues, in 1991 he was seconded to work on MI5 undercover operations against drug dealers, gangsters and terrorists, and was later awarded the Queen’s Police Medal for ‘outstanding bravery’. By all accounts, the charismatic Exton was a dedicated officer. But in November 2002, the stress appeared to have overcome his judgement when he was arrested for shoplifting.

    While working on an MI5 surveillance, Exton was caught leaving a tax-free shopping area at Manchester airport with a bottle of perfume he had not paid for. The police were called and he was given the option of the offence being dealt with under caution or to face prosecution. He chose a police caution and so in effect admitted his guilt. Exton was sacked, but was furious about the way he had been treated and threatened to sue MI5. He later set up his own consulting company and moved to Bury in Lancashire.

    While Exton, however flawed, was the genuine article as an investigator, Halligen was a very different character. Born in Dublin in 1961, he has been described as a ‘Walter Mitty figure’. He used false names to collect prospective clients at airports in order to preserve secrecy, and he called himself ‘Kevin’ or ‘Richard’ or ‘Patrick’ at different times to describe himself to business contacts. There appears to be no reason for all this subterfuge except that he thought this was what agents did. A conspiracy theorist and lover of the secret world, he is obsessed by surveillance gadgets and even installed a covert camera to spy on his own employees. He claimed to have worked for GCHQ, but in fact he was employed by the Atomic Energy Authority (AEA) as head of defence systems in the rather less glamorous field of new information technology, researching the use of ‘special batteries’. He told former colleagues and potential girlfriends that he used to work for MI5, MI6 and the CIA. He also claimed that he was nearly kidnapped by the IRA, was involved in the first Gulf War and had been a freefall parachutist.

    Very little of this is true. What is true is that Halligen has a degree in electronics, worked on the fringes of the intelligence community while at AEA and does understand government communications. He could also be an astonishingly persuasive, engaging and charming individual. Strikingly self-confident and articulate, he could be generous and clubbable. ‘He was very good company but only when it suited him’ says one friend. He kept people in compartments.’

    After leaving the AEA, Halligen set up Red Defence International Ltd as an international security and political risk company, advising clients on the risks involved in investing and doing business in unstable, war-torn and corrupt countries. He worked closely with political risk companies and was a persuasive advocate of IT security. In 2006, he struck gold when hired by Trafigura, the Dutch commodities trading company. Executives were imprisoned in the Ivory Coast after toxic waste was dumped in landfills near its biggest city Abidjan. Trafigura was blamed and hired Red Defence International at vast expense to help with the negotiations to release its executives. A Falcon business jet was rented for several months during the operation and it was Halligen’s first taste of the good life. The case only ended when Trafigura paid $197 million to the government of the Ivory Coast to secure the release of the prisoners.

    Halligen made a fortune from Trafigura and was suddenly flying everywhere first-class, staying at the Lansborough and Stafford hotels in London and The Willard hotel in Washington DC for months at a time. In 2007 he set up Oakley International Group and registered at the offices of the prestigious law firm Patton Boggs, in Washington DC, as an international security company. He was now strutting the stage as a self-proclaimed international spy expert and joined the Special Forces Club in Knightsbridge, where he met Exton.

    During the Madeleine investigation, Halligen spent vast amounts of time in the HeyJo bar in the basement of the Abracadabra Club near his Jermyn Street office. Armed with a clutch of unregistered mobile phones and a Blackberry, the bar was in effect his office. ‘He was there virtually the whole day,’ a former colleague told ES. ‘He had an amazing tolerance for alcohol and a prodigious memory and so occasionally he would have amazing bursts of intelligence, lucidity and insights. They were very rare but they did happen.’

    When not imbibing in St James’s, Halligen was in the United States, trying to drum up investors for Oakley International. On 15 August 2008, at the height of the McCann investigation crisis, he persuaded Andre Hollis, a former US Drug enforcement agency official, to write out an $80.000 cheque to Oakley in return for a ten per cent share-holding. The money was then transferred into the private accounts of Halligen and his girlfriend Shirin Trachiotis to finance a holiday in Italy, according to Hollis. In a $6 million lawsuit filed in Fairfax County, Virginia, Hollis alleges that Halligen ‘received monies for Oakley’s services rendered and deposited the same into his personal accounts’ and ‘repeatedly and systematically depleted funds from Oakley’s bank accounts for inappropriate personal expenses’.

    Hollis was not the only victim. Mark Aspinall, a respected lawyer who worked closely with Halligen, invested £500,000 in Oakley and lost the lot. Earlier this year he filed a lawsuit in Washington DC against Halligen claiming $1.4 million in damages. The finances of Oakley International are in chaos and numerous employees, specialist consultants and contractors have not been paid. Some of them now face financial ruin.

    Meanwhile, Exton was running the surveillance teams in Portugal and often paying his operatives upfront, so would occasionally be out-of-pocket because Halligen had not transferred funds. Exton genuinely believed that progress was being made and substantial and credible reports on child trafficking were submitted. But by mid-August 2008, Kennedy and Gerry McCann were increasingly concerned by an absence of details of how the money was being spent. At one meeting, Halligen was asked how many men constituted a surveillance team and he produced a piece of paper on which he wrote ‘between one and ten’. But he then refused to say how many were working and how much they were being paid.

    While Kennedy and Gerry McCann accepted that the mission was extremely difficult and some secrecy was necessary, Halligen was charging very high rates and expenses. And eyebrows were raised when all the money was paid to Oakley International, solely owned and managed by Halligen. One invoice, seen by ES, shows that for ‘accrued expenses to May 5, 2008’ (just one month into the contract), Oakley charged $74,155. The ‘point of contact’ was Halligen who provided a UK mobile telephone number.

    While Kennedy was ready to accept Halligen at face value, Gerry McCann – sharp, focused and intelligent – was more sceptical. The contract with Oakley International and Halligen was terminated by the end of September 2008, after £500,000-plus expenses had been spent.

    For the McCanns it was a bitter experience, Exton has returned to Cheshire and, like so many people, is owed money by Halligen. As for Halligen, he has gone into hiding, leaving a trail of debt and numerous former business associates and creditors looking for him. He was last seen in January of this year in Rome, drinking and spending prodigiously at the Hilton Cavalieri and Excelsior hotels. He is now believed by private investigators, who have been searching for him to serve papers on behalf of creditors, to be in the UK and watching his back. Meanwhile, in the eye of the storm, the McCanns continue the search for their lost daughter.
