Johni Michelle Heuser Charged with Murder of Baby Daughter Found Dead in Attic

johnni-michelle-heuser.jpgIn Spring Lake, North Carolina,  Johni Michelle Heuser, 25, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of her 11-month-old daughter, Harmony Jude Creech. At first, the little girl was was reported missing by her grandmother – and an Amber Alert was released – after the girl’s father, Sgt. Ronald Earl Creech II, stopped by to see her. He had just returned that morning from Iraq with the 82nd Airborne Division.

Police said that Heuser had made it look like someone had broken in and taken the child. However, they were suspicious. After being questioned by the sherriff’s department, Heuser was arrested. She finally admitted to finding the baby dead in her crib and then hiding it. Harmony’s skeletal remains were found in the attic the next day wrapped in plastic and stuffed in a diaper box. The body will be autopsied to determine the cause of death.

As part of the investigation, the sheriff’s department seized an Xbox game system, cell phone, computer, a disposable camera, baby clothing in a trash bag or box, financial documents, food receipts, baby bottles, a diaper bag, a pipe, and directions to the landfill. There are reports that Heuser was playing Xbox Live while neglecting her kids. (She has three other children by a previous relationship. All been placed in foster care.)

Thanks to Donna M. for the tip!

I can see how video game addiction is a factor to child neglect. It’s mostly online multi-player role playing games like World of Warcraft, Everquest, Lord of the Rings, and in this case, FInal Fantasy. If you are a parent, please don’t let your kids play these games… I once played world of warcraft and there was a couple on there who had their 6 yr old daughter playing a game that’s not at all for kids. My guess is that they wanted to spend time with her without sacrificing their game time so they did it virtually. And as crazy as it may sound, it is very engrossing to the point where some people (with highly addictive personalities) just can’t pull away and forget about their responsibilities. Students fail their classes, parents neglect their kids, people get fired from their jobs…Sadly, this is about the 4th case I have heard of where a child dies at the hands of a parent who is addicted to some game–it’s harder to spot this addiction too since it’s a modern addiction unlike classic addictions like alcohol and drugs. People think they’re just playing games, but you’d really have to know what you’re getting into.

I came across this video, and what the mother says in the beginning is spot on. How their behavior changes to moody, aggressive, and violatile.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8hfK3RQs2g&feature=player_embedded

It may be that Heuser snapped because the demanding baby couldn’t let her play continuously–and did the unthinkable of murdering in her rage.

babegrrl246….if it’s true that you’re 13 years old then you need to move off this site and move on to a more age appropriate one. while i think you sound very wise and mature for your age, this is an adult site honey, with things that you shouldn’t be exposed to. you seem to have a good head on your shoulders.

I live right where this happened at. The baby’s name was Harmony by the way. I’ve even held her. I won’t go into details about how my family knew her but there were family members that were close to her that still blame themselves for what happened. She still hasn’t been charged. Harmony’s body still hasn’t been released to her father so he can bury her and have a little peace from this horrible ordeal. Everybody who commented on her mental state are correct. She is a very troubled girl who I believe has never gotten the help that she needs. I’m not defending her in any way but she does need medication. When the news broke about what happened to the baby it was horrible. All of us had been up all day and night just praying something would turn up and then to find out her body was there all a long while her good for nothing mother acted as though her baby was missing. We were more grief stricken then she was. I ask everybody to please pray for Harmony’s father and siblings at this time for this will be something that will haunt them or the rest of their lives.

Well! This is just further proof that when you have kids you shouldn’t own videogames. One person went off the deep-end, so you know, it’s totally logical to ban them from ALL parents. Let’s get a petition going to ban videogames and online chats from parents.

I will give you my best guess as to how this little girl died. Rent the movie, “Trainspotting”. The mother in that movie neglected her child to death while under the influence of heroin, but I would bet the neglect this little girl suffered at the hands of her mother was probably best portrayed in the movie.

    Just sick!

Isabelle, I know it can be very disheartening to see so many stories on here of parents’ brutality towards their innocent children. But look at the other half of this coin. This site also draws many commentators who ARE being good, loving parents. I try to remember just how many GOOD parents I’ve met through this site whenever I start to feel overwhelmed by the bad things I see here.

Someone posted a link to her myspace earlier and when I looked at the face of that little girl tears fell from my eyes. She even put “mamas lil girl” underneath it. How can you neglect a child like that enough not to know she’s dead, and then try to cover it up by hiding her in your attic. It’s so depressing to read about all these stories of the parents who kill their babies, or the parents who give their kids drugs and make their children handicapped for the rest of their lives. They completely disregard common sense. No one, especially an innocent defenseless child, should go through any of this. I can’t believe people these days.

    Robot B9;

I’m inclined to agree with Kathy. While video games can be addicting, they are no more to blame for neglect than any other thing in life. I’ve seen the behavior you described in regards to soap-operas, Football, and even exercise.

The fact is that a job needs to be done, and there are consequences to ALL of us if the job is not done properly. As such, the reason that job isn’t done is irrelevant. If a person is incapable of doing the job, they they shouldn’t be trusted with it. It’s not worth the life of a human being to make certain they aren’t punished for something that isn’t their fault.

Example: A schizophrenic who is unresponsive to medication drowns one of her three children. It sucks, and it’s not her fault that she’s a schizophrenic. Still, her other two children need to be taken away from her. She poses a danger to them at worst, and a hindrance at best. As such, she should have only supervised contact with her children. It’s a sad situation, but I wouldn’t dream of punishing the children because it “Isn’t her fault.”

The part that really bothers me is that Video Games are relatively new, and thus are very very easy to blame for all of the ills of modern society. I’ve seen many parents turning video games into positive and educational experiences for their children.

Some people will spoil and pollute any positive thing. No one suggests banning sexual intercourse, just because a few people find it addictive. But new things haven’t necessarily been examined closely by the public, so they don’t have that protection.

Oh ok thanks Shel. Has anyone heard any updates as to the cause of the baby girls death?

Robot, I wish it would happen though. It’s a thought I like to consider when reading these stories. IF they had been sterile….but then there are what 3 other children by this woman that are alive and still have a chance to be productive members of society. I just hate how the cycle of violence and abuse and ignorance repeats itself over and over again!

On the 1st degree murder charge – they will probably add 2nd and manslaughter depending on how their investigation goes. I would imagine anyway. That gives the jury more options. But 1st degree charges come with a higher bond out $ and that keeps her from running.

I am new here, so bare with me. From all the articles I read she is being charged with 1st degree murder…. now isnt that a murder someone plans on committing? I mean, if the baby per say, choked, or as she said died from SIDS, or she even maybe “forgot” about the baby…. I mean wouldnt the charges be 2nd degree murder or less? So, if she was being charged with 1st degree murder wouldnt that rule out “accidental” death, no matter what from?

You are right Kathy, there is no excuse. The thing is not all parents are created equal. The real question is how far our society should go to equalize things.

Get rid of bad parents = fewer messed up adults.

Sure it would be cool to blast bad parents into space or remove their critical reproductive organs, but that is just not going to happen.

A better and more effective child protection service system would be a good start.

Kathy, that’s a great idea. Let’s add mandatory sterilization if you are even brought up on charges of murder, child endangerment or abuse and we’ll sign that bill into law today!!!
