Milwaukee foster breeder kills nephew

Foster mother charged with killing boy, abusing girl:

Infant Christopher L. Thomas Jr. and his 2-year-old sister were removed from their parents care. Their mother had mental problems and their father was sent to jail on drug charges. They were both placed with caring foster parents. For some reason when the foster parents who were taking care of Christopher tried to adopt him Christopher and his sister were moved into the care of their aunt Crystal P. Keith. Keith began abusing them almost immediately…

Keith told police, whom she called to her home Monday, that she repeatedly slapped Christopher in the face for not eating, according to the criminal complaint. She said she choked him, hung him upside down and pressed his head on the floor. At some point, the infant’s eyes rolled back into his head and he began to vomit. He stopped breathing. She then stuck the handle of a hairbrush down Christopher’s throat, she said, in order to revive him.

Christopher died the next day.

Christopher’s sister would endure scaldings from Keith. Keith would bandage over the blisters but then the blisters would burst adhering the bandages to her flesh.

Maybe someone with a little more knowledge can enlighten me. Why would the state take Christopher out of the original foster parents home because he was going to be adopted?

Thanks to Nurse Sarah for the tip.

Gosh, anonymous, what a terrible story. Hyperemesis must be one of the worst things a person can go through. It’s awful that your girlfriend didn’t receive the help she deserved. Not that there is a whole lot that can be done about hyperemesis; even with treatment women suffer horribly. I’m glad the marijuana helped.
I wish you and your girlfriend and your baby a very happy life together.

I’ll relate my experience about CPS and hopefully I won’t get flamed too badly for it. When our daughter was born they performed a mandatory drug test on my gf and our baby. The results came up positive for marijuana (she suffered from hyperemisis and basically no Medical doctor would take her because we didn’t find out she was pregnant until 14 weeks in which means she had a ‘preexisting condition’ and was too much of a liability for most of the overworked Docs. So she never received any type of treatment for her hyperemsis and marijuana was the best option which allowed her to keep food down and keep the baby healthy).

CPS seemed to care a lot at the hospital when they were notified by the social worker and got to threaten to “take our baby away” (she was less than 2 days old at this time). They were also very impressed with themselves when they forced my girlfriend to sign up for Drug Court or they would “open a case” on us. Drug Court itself was over 200 hours not including the 2 hour round trip drive time. They were also going to set up visits to our home to make sure we’re good parents. A few days later we call the CPS officer to schedule the visits and we get a message saying she no longer works there and has been moved to a different department. Her new number was disconnected for over a week before we stopped trying. So now we have no contact to even arrange for them to visit us. My gf eventually goes down to her first day of Drug Court (scheduled w/ CPS at the hopital) and after looking at her file the person in charge pretty much says you’re no where near screwed up enough to belong here and you shouldn’t even of been sent here in the first place and she gets signed off and dismissed in less than 10 minutes. We haven’t heard back from anyone in two years.

So that was my experience with CPS. They got to terrorize and scare two young parents, place onerous burdens on their lives, and do so with the full faith and power of the government, who can take your child away if it deems you unfit. Note none of this would have happened if my gf could have gotten proper treatment for her hyperemisis rather then being kicked around from doctor to doctor. For an idea on how bad it was she got tested for AIDS more times (6) then she got sonogramed(4 including one 1 week before birth). I’ll save the rest of my Medical bashing for another time, but that was my fun experience with the County of Riverside in the great state of California

WOW! I can’t help but believe that this is the reason why so many of these abused children fall through the cracks – no follow-up whatsoever. Otherwise, someone must be able to tell whether a child is being abused / neglected or not, right? But then again, from what I’ve read even then, no action is taken. Very sad and disheartening. How do those social worker’s live with themelselves or sleep at night?

Does anyone know how often CPS is required to do follow-up visits or physical evaluations after the child is placed?

The problem is in a lot of these cases that CPS claims to be so overworked that a lot of times they just say they made visits.

    Michael-

I don’t believe in god. However, I believe that if a god did exist, he would have had to have given man free will.
Who would want to worship a god that would have such atrocities be part of his “Big Plan?”

And hell? Hell is right here on earth. Especially for babies like these.

And yes, I did mean only force. Sorry for the confusion. All men have the potential for good an evil inside of them. It comes down to choices. You choose to do what is moral and right, or you can choose the other. People with or without God in their lives make these choices everyday.

It takes a special kind of sick to hurt defenseless children. I’m sure the god of any religion would not like to claim responsibility for any of it.

    Kathy,

I was intending my comment about “other forces” to be directed toward people who believe that there is a God. Tietsu’s comment seemed to indicate this (although perhaps only as a joke) – so I was basically defending God and saying that just because evil forces are allowed to exist and have influence doesn’t mean that God has taken a vacation. But if you don’t believe in God to begin with, then of course that sounds like nonsense.

So perhaps the big question is – By “other force” did you really mean “the ONLY force” is man’s free will, meaning there are no spiritual forces at work in the world? Or do you believe that there IS a God, but that there is no such thing as evil?

The reason I am asking is because they are two completely different arguments.

Honestly, I have been worried all day that I sent my 5 1/2 year old to school today with chapped lips and no chap stick. How do these people do these things to children?

I am amazed at the level of pre-screenings most families endure when attempting to foster or adopt a child – in the beginning of course, yet CPS just throws children into the hands of biological family members so easily. Aren’t these people required to take parenting classes, submit to drug tests, background checks, personal reference checks, business / employment reference checks, etc. before being “given” a child, in most cases to just collect the financial benefits? It truly makes me sick.

These stories – and ones I have encountered in “real life” – fill me with such rage and disgust. But if we don’t reveal the depths of the problem, we have no hope of ever finding a real solution.

    Thank you.

I can’t help but think that in addition to the mindset of “biology is best,” there was something more at work here. Did you notice the age of the foster mom who wanted to adopt? She was 63. Some smacked ass at child services probably said “Oh, she’s too old to adopt an infant. He’d be better off with family.”

AND, if she was white, and the infant was black, there might also have been the racial component. There are actually still people in the world — and many in a position of power — who think children are better off with someone of the same racial background, rather than being best off with someone who loves them and takes care of them regardless of race, ethnicity or sexual orientation.

My heart breaks for this baby, and especially for that foster mom who was ready to open her heart and devote the rest of her life to loving and taking care of him. She is as much a victim of this evil P.O.S as that baby was.

    Michael,

Why would they prefer to keep the child with the “real”/blood family? Where was this family when the child was put into the foster system to begin with? Most childrens’ social service agencies will seek out family to care for a child BEFORE they are put into the foster system. That is when it is in the best interest of the child. A child is usually only put with strangers when there is no family available or deemed fit to care for the child.

It pisses me off that these kids have the chance at a healthy happy normal life with people that love them and just because someone shares a few strands of DNA with them, they are ripped from those homes. It takes more than some chromosomes to make someone a fit parent.

The real family of that child are the ones that maintained a safe, healthy environment filled with love, caring and emotional support.

Though it is not mentioned here, I suspect the fact that the foster family was white and the child was black may have had something to do with it too.

The only other force at work here is man’s free will. The “devil” did not make this woman beat those children. She did it because she is a sick, sadistic and selfish bitch. More than likely, her husband was the one who wanted to take the children in and she was the one stuck caring for them. She resented it and took it out on the babies. She is a coward.

    Tietsu,

You’re right about people being fucked up in the head. But you’re wrong about God vacating the premises. He’s still here, but he’s not the only force at work in the world. And it’s the other side/force that causes these sucky stories to happen.

    Kathy,

Good input. And you’re right about the system being flawed – but it does make sense too. I’m not saying that it’s best, but I can understand why the powers that be would prefer to keep the child with their real/blood family.

Ideally, they should probably decide on a case-by-case basis instead of having a blanket policy to decide these things. If the real family is a bunch of f*^k ups with a history of crime, unemployment, stank hole for a house, etc – and the foster family has their act together and obviously loves and cares for the child, then let them adopt!

In my experience, children that are about to be adopted are taken from foster homes because someone in the biological family objected to the adoption.

Biological extended families are given first “dibs” at children that are available for adoption. Even if they have never met the child, blood relatives are preferred over foster parents that have basically raised these children from birth.

this happened to a close friend of mine. They had a little girl from 3 days old. Raised her until 18 months old when the parent’s rights were about to be terminated. Planned on adopting and out of nowhere comes the biological uncle and grandmother. These people were strangers to this child. Throughout the entire life of this child they had the chance to participate in visitations, the 1st birthday party, holidays, etc. but chose not to.

The child was removed from their home and given to these people. She did not know them. It was terrifying for her. They did not care about the child before, but the thought of the child being adopted “outside” the family was more than they could handle.

Reunification is bullshit. The rights of the child should overshadow the rights of adults. But it never works out that way. The system is extremely flawed.

Why? Because we are all totally fucked in the head and whatever god may have existed at one point promptly looked at what he had created vomited violently, creating beer. After he noticed that we managed to turn THAT against ourselves. He then vacated his home and resettled in an uncharted portion of existence where time has yet to exist and reality is only an impulse.

He is said to be doing much MUCH better.
