Vegetarian man beats 3-year-old son to cast out the meat demons

Trench Reynolds

Father jailed in beating of 3-year-old:

The smiling idiot over there is 35-year-old Jacky Tran of Houston, Texas. He beat his 3-year-old son so badly that according to police the child’s head was the color maroon. And why did Tran think the child deserved such a helalcious beating? Tran, who is a Buddhist, became an extremist in his views recently and the vegetarian Tran thought the boy had demons after he ate a piece of meat.

The strange thing is that Tran had no prior criminal record and CPS had never been to the house before. That makes me think that he either went certifiably insane in a very short time or someone whispered into his ear to make him have new found zealotry in his beliefs.

And before anyone gets up in my grill this isn’t an indictment on Buddhism or vegetarianism, it’s just on one psycho who happens to be both.

Thanks to CR for the tip.

Why is he smiling in his mugshot? And…what is he thinking? And where is the mother when that happened? You don’t beat any children for eating anything that you don’t even want them to! I really want to kill this man myself. The dude likes pain? I’d give him pain…or even worse yet (for him, of course), let’s make sure that he gets his ass beat down by his inmates cuz even inmates hate child abusers. Oh, and I also want to wipe that stupid smirk off his ugly face myself. As for that poor kid, I hope he finds a loving home.

Demons from eating meat, huh, what???

Ok, this is the 2nd post… maybe the 3rd… in THIS YEAR 2009 alone, where a parent tried to kill/harm their child because they thought the child had a demon??? Remember the mom in the laundry room who was stabbing her 2 year old with scissors?

WTF is going on… drugs in our water supply?

And hadn’t any of these people seen the Excorcist? You go get a priest, not a pair of scissors.

Then, hopefully, the priest can see if the child is truly possessed, or if the parent is just off his or her rocker.

Assuming of course the priest isn’t a child molestor, and he decides to take advantage of this bizzare situation… sigh.

Holy crap. Read the story. He went totally bonkers.

What the hell set it off? It looks like he was actually a really nice, normal guy.

What’s really weird is how his wife seemed to be accepting the verdict of “demons in her son”, when she was trying to soothe the poor boys bruises in the tub. Either she somehow went over the deep end with her husband, or she was in shock, and just numbly repeating what her husband had said.

    Holy crap.

I bet the Dad ends up having a brain tumor. That would explain the sudden change in behavior.

I hope if I ever have anything that drastically and negatively changes how I think/feel (no PMS jokes, please), that I’ll go get help before I hurt someone. :P

OK, seriously? I think this man was demon-possessed. He suddenly changes his behavior, becoming vegetarian, throws out all the furniture, buries a statue that he thinks has a demon in it? And what’s with the alarm sounding at the house? I think the mom pushed the panic button when her husband went berserk and was coping the best she could till authorities could come and contain the madness.

It’s sad. At least the kid is expected to survive. Maybe not with a normal life, but life is something, isn’t it? The mom will end up losing custody of both her kids because she couldn’t take care of this craziness before the police arrived.

Religious people are a danger to themselves and others.

The voice in your head is not God, it’s because you have brain damage. Damage to the temporal lobes causes people to think their own thoughts are coming from an outside presence. The experiences are then interpreted in their social constructs. It shows up on fMRI scans in the same parts of the brain regardless of the religion and atheists tend to think it’s aliens, ghosts or even pan-dimensional beings.

Damage can be genetic or environmental. Often it appears after head trauma, malnutrition, fasting, heat stroke, drug abuse or a combination thereof.

If you think you hear voices or God or some other force is telling you to do things, you owe it to yourself to research this and then go see a doctor.

Ugly, I read that book. It was pretty good.

The voices in my head tell me to feed the dogs and change the baby’s diaper.

I try to ignore them and clean my guns instead.

[Sorry, your post just demanded the proverbial "voices-in-my-head", "must clean guns" joke. ;) ]

Seriously, I would have to agree about most of what you say, except I do believe it is possible to have a true experience of God, of the divine, in your life.

It’s just that you have to be really careful to discern what is a real experience, and what is a mass hypnosis / pumped-up crowd situation.

And you have to be very careful to discern who the real Christians are, and who the false prophets are.

I gotta agree with SithSnoopy. This sounds like a brain tumor or some kind of brain damage for the guy to just go off the deep end like this.

One question that does come to mind though – if the family was vegetarian where did the kid get the meat that prompted the beating?

Okay guys, this has nothing to do with “God”…Main point being that Buhhist don’t believe in God. Many do however wish to believe in a higher being perhalfs in their creation that’s god but my point stands that this man wasn;t a true buddhist if he claims his son had demons from eating meat because in true buddhist scripture it says nothing about eating meat being bad what soever!! they are about enlightenment in one’s life….In all seriousness He is just crazy i agree with y’all on that tumour thang..or he’s a fuckin nut

My understanding of Buddhism is that one of only a few possessions a Buddhist monk is allowed to have is a sieve – for fishing bugs out of his water so as not to HARM ANY BUGS. So let’s just throw out the whole religious argument right here, and say the guy is nuts, nuts, nuts.

That poor, poor child! I am just horrified at the description of his injuries and his state. Multiple skull fractures! OMG! Has there been an update on his condition?

As for the Father, he also could have Schizophrenia. This is a horrible disease of the brain that affects the persons ability to separate reality from imagination, much as Ugly American said, which is why they suffer from delusional thinking. The brains of schizophrenics have the same waves going on when they are awake as when a normal person is asleep. It progresses rather slowly, so oftentimes, the person’s family and friends just think they are weird, or need to get a grip, or just need to make better decisions, and are being stubborn. He’s the right age for it, too. It seems impossible for any one in their right mind to actually believe meat can harbor demons and beating will get them out.

Normally, I’d be first in line to beat the crap out of the guy and force-feed him a Big Mac or two. But reading the background and him having NO history of odd or violent behavior, yeah it really sounds like some kind of brain injury.

I’ve known a few people who had brain injuries and it can totally change one’s personality. It could have been a tumor or even a stroke.

Personally, all of the stories I have read for so long now that involve children have me to the point of where I can’t take it anymore. But, it has made me realize that they are easy targets for these killers and in so many of these cases, it’s always the innocent child that suffers. The evil adult commits the crime, the innocent nice sweet child has to endure all the pain and torture. It doesn’t make sense but that is always how it is. So what does it mean and will it ever change? I just don’t know.

I’m interested to see the so-called mom’s mugshot (sarcasm!); in fact, Phung Tran is a truly fat ugly bloated bitch that should’ve kept her legs closed at all times. Keeping your legs shut all the time, not having sex at all and using lots of protection do not need a diploma of any kind, at least not necessarily, that’s just common sense. Especially if you can’t handle kids. Those so-called parents need to be beat down by their inmates. I hope their poor children never go back to that house again.

I’m trying to imagine… and failing – totally failing to imagine it, what kind of betrayal goes through the mind of a 3 year old that is being beaten like that by his own father.

I have a 4 year old. He’s a bright kid, he’s starting to read already, and his favorite TV show is edutainment about astrophysics…

But he’s not THAT far ahead of average. He was damn good and well aware of what was going on in his life at that age.

Even if the kid physicall recovers, a betrayal that severe, that early in his life is going to scar him unimaginably for the rest of his life.

These are the stories that make me believe in the death penalty.

Oh yeah… and the sentence needs to be carried out in public, and gruesomely if possible. Bring back the guillotine in the town square!

“Bring back the guillotine in the town square!”

Or, just beat them to death with sticks. That would take longer, and hurt more. And be more appropriate. A guillotine would be waaaay too quick for these sick people.

That poor boy died by his parents’ hands, and was probably crying the whole time, and asking “Why? Why Mommy, why?” How anyone could do this to ANY child, let alone their own, is completely beyond me. I think a post-birth abortion is in order for these two parents. After all, that’s what they gave their son….

As for Jacky and his wife, he still could be bonkers, and she could be one of those women that is so codependent and insecure that she doesn’t have the balls to stand up to him and makes excuses for him. LIsa, what other mass shooting? The most recent one I’m aware of was that Vietnamese man shooting down a bunch of people in a place in New York state for those applying for citizenship to learn English. I believe that was 13 people dead, plus himself, when he killed himself.

Was there another mass shooting I am unaware of?

    Yikes.

Feels like there’s alot of people bent on committing suicide, and taking out as many other people with them as possible. It’s like some suicide virus or something.

Hey, Snoops — the latest one involves a shooting at a retreat. One killed, three seriously injured. Not as bad as I had orginally heard, or maybe I’m just getting my mass murders mixed up. How sad is that? Serial Killers have always been around, but mass murder is a 20th century plague. It’s horrible. I’m really disgusted by the father who shot his 5 children then himself to get back at his cheating wife.

Ironic that all these mass shootings are happening as we approach the 10-year anniversary of Columbine on April 20. A decade after one of the worst gun-related tragedies in American history – perpetrated by children with legally obtained guns – and we’ve haven’t learned diddly about how to keep guns out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have them.

LIsa, I saw that on the news… Korean Christian retreat, right? Vaguely remember the father-shoots-5-children-revenge against wife thing. Nuts. Alot of that going around, it seems.

Ihavekidstoo, before you throw the baby out with the bathwater there, you might want to check out:
    http://womenofcaliber.wordpress.com/2009/03/26/children-and-guns%e2%80%94part-i/

    Or http://www.learnaboutguns.com

The greatest percentage of gun violence is done by those who illegally obtained guns and/or did not receive training on the proper and safe use of guns. Honestly, in the first link above, the woman did thorough research on how ironically, if you de-mystify guns for children, it actually reduces the odds that they will go on to use a gun for violence!

I know that’s hard to believe. I think it’s a combination of making a gun NOT be a forbidden fruit, and also teaching the child RESPONSIBILITY. No, I’m not saying you can give a 2 year old a gun and walk away and everything will be fine! I’m talking about responsible training.

It’s like dog ownership. If you are responsible, you feed your dog proper food, you take care of his health needs, you properly socialize him around other dogs, people, and children, and you train him. And of course you keep up your dogs vaccinations and registration. And of course, you show the dog you love and respect him.

Legal gun ownership involves having a background check and having that gun attached to your name. Being allowed to keep that gun is dependant upon not having a crime traced back to that gun, and thus to you.

Illegal gun ownership means not caring so much about if a crime is traced back to that gun, as you’ve gotten the gun illegally, so you’ve kept away from any paper trail or background checks. No-one knows that gun is yours. And if you toss it, you can illegally get another one to replace it.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that I sense an attitude of dissallowing anyone to have guns. Problem is that making gun ownership illegal means the law-abiding citizens can’t defend themselves against criminals who will still obtain guns illegally.

    Whoa. Soapbox, lol. Sorry. ;)

Anyway, I don’t think making guns illegal would prevent Columbine.

Wow — Columbine. While I made my post about mass murderers, I remembered Columbine, and how there was a rash of school mass murders around that time. It is hard to believe that it has been ten years — and I am glad that school shootings by “children” are not happening on such a scale as they were for a few years there. Or is it the media? Talking to myself here — Nah, they wouldn’t NOT report on school shootings, would they? And that gets back to my comment that things are getting so much worse, or is it just that instant information thing? Is mankind really going to hell in a handbasket, or has mankind always been full of depravity? I mean, Sodom and Gomorrah were pretty depraved, eh?

Speaking of Columbine, a group of teens in VA were caught with 28 homemade explosives. One of them had a fascination with Columbine, and brought a fake explosive to school on the anniversary 2 years ago. (In the house of another teen in the group, cops found a slew of live cats (like 60) and a slew more dead ones in the freezer. WTFword????) Wonder if they had something planned for the anniversary? If so, looks like they would not have used guns.

I honestly was expecting alot of heat for my post above. Especially from any poor soul who has lost a loved one due to a gang shooting. :(

Sith, you make a great point — if guns were banned in the US, the black market for illegal guns would mushroom. There do need to be controls, though. But banning them is not the answer to the gun violence in this country. I wish I knew the answer, and I wish it were a quick fix, but we all know that is wishful thinking.

Sith, I also agree with you completely. Most crimes of violence involving guns are committed by people who either were not taught about guns in a responsible manner, or weren’t taught at all. I am an avid proponent of responsible gun ownership. I own several myself. I have a concealed carry permit, and I never leave home without my baby glock. All of our guns in the house are kept put away from the children, and unloaded. Except for the aforementioned glock, which I keep in my purse at all times, and loaded, but not chambered. None of my children who are still at home could chamber a round even if they wanted to, because the pull on the slide is so difficult.

I have had to draw my firearm twice in self-defense, once when someone broke into my home when I was eight months pregnant and my husband was on a TDY, and another time when someone tried to rob/carjack me in Atlanta. (I’m not really sure if the guy wanted just my money, or my Suburban as well, but he knocked on my window and showed me a knife, so I showed him a gun, and I won.) Neither time did I have to actually fire my gun, because in both cases, when the person saw that I had a firearm, they left almost immediately. Which was smart, because I am also a very good shot, and would have no problem at all shooting someone to protect my children.

My husband and I took our two oldest children to the range when they were seven or eight. We showed them exactly what a hollow-point round could do to various objects, and instilled in them a healthy respect for firearms. The younger children will probably be going to the range this summer for the same sort of ‘training’. We have also let our two oldest (who are now 15 and 19) do some target practice at the range, so they also know how to handle the guns, and what kind of recoil to expect. And when the others are twelve or so, I plan to let them have some target practice, too.

I think that banning guns would only create a situation where only criminals would be able to get guns, and law abiding citizens would be at their mercy. Heaven forbid!

Sith, I’m not saying guns should be outlawed. Just that we should have better laws about who can have them and how they can get them. Columbine was a horrific example of irresponsible gun ownership. All guns involved were legally obtained for CHILDREN by their PARENTS who never bothered to teach them anything about responsible gun ownership. Parents who were also somehow totally unaware that one of the children involved was a psychopath and the other suicidally depressed. Irresponsible gun ownership AND irresponsible parenting – a fatal mixture.

Sadly, not everyone who is legally able to get their hands on a gun is as responsible about having it as Angel seems to be. I’m in favor of laws that would require people to behave more responsibly with the guns they are constitutionally entitled to own. Like laws that say if you have a gun AND a kid, keep the gun locked up away from the kid, or laws that say you can’t buy a gun at ALL until you’ve completed some kind of police-led firearms course on responsible ownership AND passed a psychological exam to prove you’re not a psycho or a complete idiot. Some areas have those kinds of laws but too many don’t.

  • Angel

Gary, both parents were involved in the beating. So, I think the brain tumor theory is out.

Guys, thanks for all your responses. :) Sorry if I overreacted regarding the right to own guns.

Temporary duty assignment. I Guess it should be called a TDA, but I’ve always heard other military wives say TDY. Perhaps I’m hearing impaired? LOL.

And yes, protection is my primary reason for carrying. I have seen enough ugliness in my life to know that evil can jump out at you from across the world……or across the room. You have to be prepared in order to protect those you love. And I am. Without reservation. Always.

Oh, clarification: A temporary duty assignment is just what it sounds like. It’s when the military spouse is sent to another location for a short time, without moving the entire family. It can last anywhere from a few days to a year or more. As in the case of wartime deployment, I believe most deployments to Iraq, etc. are considered TDYs since spouses cannot go (because of obvious reasons). Each time my husband has been sent to Iraq, his orders have been TDY.
