On the run cancer mom: Good parent or PBB?

Trench Reynolds

Arrest ordered for mom of 13yo boy resisting chemo:

Ok Breeder Readers, it’s debate time.

As I’m sure you know by now Colleen Hauser of Minnesota is on the run after being court ordered to get medical help for her 13-year-old son Daniel Hauser. Daniel has Hodgkins lymphoma which is highly curable under the care of a physician.

Daniel only underwent one round of chemotherapy. His parents then sought other opinioons and the other doctors told them the same thing as the original diagnosis. Not getting the answer they were looking for apparently Daniel’s parents started treating Daniel with natural alternatives.

Colleen Hauser testified at the earlier hearing that her son “is not in any medical danger.” She said she had been treating his cancer with herbal supplements, vitamins, ionized water, and other natural alternatives.

However the doctors who have examined Daniel say his cancer is getting worse. Danie;’s court appointed attorney says that Daniel has diminished capacity because he can’t read and because of his age.

Now, the Hauser’s are claiming that they’re not treating Daniel for religious reasons yet they’re Roman Catholic. I’m Roman Catholic, so was my father. He was treated for cancer on multiple occasions. My dad was a hardcore Catholic too. If it was against the church doctrine my dad would have died when I was 10.

The religion she’s claiming is the Nemenhah Band which the article describes as a Missouri-based religious group that believes in natural healing methods advocated by some American Indians.

Daniel claims to be an elder in the band, but does not know what that means. Daniel also says he is a medicine man under Nemenhah teachings but can’t say how he became a medicine man or what teachings he has had to become one.

And now that the court has ordered the Hausers to get reasonable care for their son Collen Hauser has taken Daniel on the run.

I’m all for religious freedom as long as it doesn’t put someone’s life at risk and that’s exactly what Colleen Hauser is doing. Her son could be cancer free but since she believes in some wacky new age philosophy she’s using her cancer ridden son to make a point that’s going to get him killed.

If you’re one of those people who believes in ‘natural’ treatments over medical science and you’re offended over what I said then I’m glad and I don’t care that you’re offended.

So what say you PBB faithful. Good mom or dangerous idiot?

That’s about the most asinine comment I’ve ever read. So, you are saying that parents can only be guilty of murder if they use a gun or a knife? What about:

The child who is not given proper nutrition (and starves to death)
The child who is not given proper clothing (and freezes to death in the winter)
The child who is not given enough fluids (and dies of dehydration)
The child who gets a cut, and it is left untreated (and dies of sepsis)
The child who ingests drugs left lying around (and dies of an OD)
The child whose parent shakes it (causing brain damage and subsequent death)
The child whose parents beat it with a 2×4 (and it dies of blunt force trauma)

    Shall I go on?

A gun or a knife? Most of the kids on this website should be so lucky…at least that would have been quick. Most of the kids we read about here are TORTURED for months before they are killed. Which, I understand would be similar to the pain this child would endure if he died of cancer that was left untreated.

“But, I’m sure that you won’t get it since you have already made up you mind that you know more about medicine, parenting, and this woman’s religion the the woman herself.”

Well lets see, Im a nurse *she’s not*, Im a great parent who gets my kids the medical treatment they need *she doesnt*, and I dont think SHE really even knows her religion…. so yeah….

  • Trench Reynolds Says:

In Soviet Russia your kids kill cancer.

But, I’m sure that you won’t get it since you have already made up you mind that you know more about medicine, parenting, and this woman’s religion the the woman herself.

The woman and her son are Roman Catholic. She’s claiming some new age treatment. So it’s not really religion we’re talking about.

  • Trench Reynolds Says:

She is NOT killing her child. She is actually making her decision as to what is the best to save her child according to her beliefs.

Except her decision would kill her child.

  • Samantha Says:

    Very well said Lisa…
    and you too Trench

  • Trench Reynolds Says:

What has happened to “freedom” in the United States?

No one has the “freedom” to kill their kids.

  • LIsa Says:

Pug, I think you actually hit the nail on the head with your statement, “should try to force someone to do anything against their freedoms unless if infringes on the freedoms of others.” I realize you are speaking in generalities, however, it is important to look at specifics. In this country, we do not have the freedom to do anything we want. That would be anarchy and chaos. We must have laws and rules, and we exercise our rights and freedoms within those laws. I for one am glad that we have a system that looks out for the rights of children, because children are not in the position, intellectuallly or otherwise, to look out for themselves. Parents are entrusted with their care, and are required by law to care for them until they are of age. Medical personnel have been given specific rules and laws they must abide by concerning children, and I am grateful we have those laws; the fact is sometimes parents do not do what is best for their children. You must remember that this young boy is developmentally delayed, and therefore cannot make sound judgements as to his care. Also remember specifically, that this form of cancer is extremely treatable — with treatment he has a 95% chance of living. without, only 5%. If the medical professionals believe that the mother is not acting in the best interests of the child, they are duty-bound to get the courts to intervene. This case was heard by a court, and the court believed, with all the evidence presented, that the treatment prescribed by the doctors was the best thing for this child to have a chance at life, to be able to have Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

I happen to agree with the courts on this issue.

Im not from Russia, but thanks anyway!

  • Samantha Says:

    No I didnt say that.
    But, in a way, yes.
It is medical neglect if you do not get your child the medical attention he/she needs.
Did I say she should be tried for murder? No. But if her neglecting to get her child the proper care he needed led to his death, then yes she is responsible.
Say, if a child has a severe UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) and the Dr prescribes antibiotics but the parent does not give it and the child then becomes septic and dies, they too should be held responsible.

  • Pug Says:

Samantha said “If he were to die then yes, I believe, that she killed her son.”

So, every parent that has a child that gets sick, and the child dies should be tried for murder if they didn’t hand their children over to the hospitals?
That’s crazy! Go back in time to Soviet Russia, and stay there.

  • Pug Says:

Samatha, you can’t be serious…How do I know that she is not killing her child? Hmmm, because she doesn’t have a knife or a gun in her hand…That’s a pretty good reason.
But, I’m sure that you won’t get it since you have already made up you mind that you know more about medicine, parenting, and this woman’s religion the the woman herself.
    Sad.

  • Samantha Says:

She denied treatment for this child who has a highly treatable form of cancer…

If he were to die then yes, I believe, that she killed her son.

  • LIsa Says:

Gosh, I haven’t seen that lil crying baby in so long — any one who happened to see him on my screen would say, “WTF?” :) ) Me so Bad!

I just had to respond, tho. You know, I sure would like to know how this young boy is doing — any updates, Trench?
