I read this story yesterday, what makes no sense is that she went to school everyday, unlike some of these other stories where the kids had been pulled out of school, how in the hell could no one at the school see the abuse??? Was everyone blind or just looking the other way??? Bless her and I know she is not hurting anymore.

I kind of wondered that myself, Jenny….but then I remembered my own school years. I frequently wore long sleeves and jeans, even in the hottest months, to cover bruises, welts, and other injuries. On the rare occasions when someone would get a glimpse of a bruise or mark, I was always able to come up with a plausible explanation. Because no child would lie about abuse if asked directly….right? Wrong.

Children do whatever they have to to make sure that their lives are not disrupted any more than necessary. With abused children, the beatings often become the ‘norm’ for them, and they believe that they deserve such treatment. Telling another adult (in their eyes) is like admitting that they are a bad child, and asking for more abuse from the other adults around them. Because, “If I’m so bad that my own Daddy doesn’t like me, then anyone who finds out will hate me even more than he does.” Sad, but I lived through it. And, honestly, the physical scars heal much more completely than the mental scars do. There have been many times in my adult life when I have looked in the mirror, and saw the face of that “worthless piece of shit” (one of my dad’s pet names for me) looking out. And many adults are simply not observant enough to see abuse when the child goes to such great lengths to hide it.

How could someone beat a 10 year old like that?! There’s NOTHING a child can do to deserve that. Oddly enough, the only thing I can think of an ADULT doing to make them deserve being beaten so badly is treating a child that way. There’s no reason for this.. none.

Here is another article – The step brothers are 16 and 19, It doesn’t say which was accused. It also states that they were questioned and released. This article has a little more info – Neighbors say they thought she was just sick because she was thin and walked with a limp. If they only knew….

They knew, April. SOMEONE sure as hell knew or suspected. I mean, someone had to give the girl the weave that covered the 7-inch gash on her head, right? What was that beautician thinking as she covered over what she/he HAD to have realized was a sign of abuse. People always KNOW, they just choose to look the other way.

I nearly got my clock cleaned the other day when I told off a penis who was leaving my son’s daycare with his girlfriend’s toddler son. The dick is carrying this little sweetie, who’s maybe 2, out of the center when the kid starts to cry (probably afraid of the penis based on past experience) and this utter ASSHOLE gives the baby a really hard shake and BARKS at him “Shut up. Shut the fuck up.” I LOST it on his sorry ass and he looked like he would have laid me out on the pavement if the center owner and other witnesses hadn’t been there. I told him I’d be watching him and the center owner said they would be watching to make sure the child shows NO signs of abuse. I asked the owner if she’d give me the mother’s name and phone number but she declined to do that. But she did say she would talk to the mom – for whatever that’s worth.

I know I poked my nose in, but what if I didn’t and the next day or week or month I saw a news report about that very same child? I’d die of guilt and shame that I saw a sign and did nothing. More people need to speak up and get involved when they suspect abuse like this. Maybe this little girl would still be alive if that beautician or a neighbor had just spoken up.

We cringe at the thought of them getting sick, injured, or worse…. die – This child suffered all of those thing and no one loved her enough to save her – NO ONE!!

Like Angel stated in the article… TALK to your children. Tell them that some “secrets” really need to be told to an adult. Tell them that advice is not only for them, but also for things their friends tell them. Give them examples “If Missy tells you that her daddy hurts her because he touches her private area, then you need to tell me so I can help Missy.” “If the babysitter hits you, or hurts you, or scares you but says not to tell mommy, then you TELL mommy as soon as the babysitter leaves.”

I was 17 before I ever told my parents about the crazy babysitter who chased me through the house with knives and scissors and who threatened to kill me, chop me in pieces, put me in a garbage bag filled with rocks and sink me to the bottom of the pond, and then tell my parents that I ran away from home. They were shocked. But, the babysitter said she’d kill me if I told, so I didn’t tell.

We have an obligation to protect our children as best we can. But, that often requires communication from them. And, if we’re decent human beings, we’ll do what we can to protect other children, too. I’ve told my nieces, nephews, and other kids I know, that they can always come and tell me anything because I want to protect them and sometimes I need their help to do it.

My mom is a teacher and worries about disrupting a family if an abuse allegation turns out to be false. I remind her that she is legally obligated to report abuse and neglect. And, her conscience will clear a whole lot faster if the allegation is false. She might never get over the guilt of deciding to mind her own business if she’s attending the funeral of one of her students.

I work for an agency that was contracted to work with this child in 2006 and 2007. Child was examined for sexual abuse but not physical abuse.

What?!? I would think that in the course of doing a check for sexual abuse, they would have noticed the physical abuse. Were they blind? And what of the sexual abuse….the authorities seem to think that she had been sexually assaulted, and the school chum’s claims back that up. So, again….how did the doctors and child welfare groups miss all of that? Were they blind, or just stupid?

I told her to do the right thing and go to the cops with my sister or else I would make sure the cops went to her themselves. My sister and her friend were 16ish. (As I didn’t know this friends last name, address, or who was hurting her)

Yes many people failed here and there are many internal investigations going on within DHS, the School District, and other community resources that worked with this family on and off for the last three years.

What a shame. I hope that everyone that has come in contact with Charleeni can live knowing that they share the blame in her murder. She’s was failed by so many. All it took was one person to do the ringht thing. What a shame to have lost such a beutiful child because people were to selfish or to lazy to help.

The biggest problem is that people are (pardon the language) but chicken shit to ask any questions. My understanding is that the School Nurse kept saying that this girl was being abused and no one in the school Administration believed her. Again this is an utter failure from top to bottom.

I can’t agree with you more. My heart is broken for her. I would give anything to undo this. She looks like such a sweet child. I can’t imagine what she could have done to make them mad enough to even spank her – and they friggin’ beat her TO DEATH!!! I hope if anything good comes of this, there will be some sort of reform to the DHS and that the city will retrain school staff to be more diligent in matters like these. It’s better to make a report and have it be wrong, then to NOT make a report and wind up with a dead child and her blood on your hands.

I can not disclose who I am or where I work due to Confidentiality but I am very close to this case and I will keep you all posted but I am going to be working on a task force to make sure this never happens again and to improve communication on issues like this between the School District, DHS and other Community Provider Agencies.

Her friend is spilling the beans. A little too late, if you ask me. She wore make up to caver briuses and wigs to cover where the step mother pulled her hair out. This gets more and more heartbreaking with every new detail….

DHS already had a huge scandal.

How long until we scrap this BS system? I’m not saying that police are perfect but we need to at least hold children’s services to the same standard as cops -real oversight: civilian, internal, governmental, financial, etc.

That poor little girl. Almost every single person in her life failed her. What are their bullshit excuses going to be? Was she ever around any of her friend’s parents? Did they notice and say nothing? I can’t believe that two school nurses knew there was abuse and no one listened to them.

That there were reportedly 3-4 different times she saw doctors, and except for one visit scheduled by her parents, the doctors specialized in child abuse and found NO current abuse.

And as easy as it is to blame the friends’ parents there were people TRAINED to find child abuse in the house at least twice a week for 12 weeks and they didn’t find anything nor did doctors specialising in abuse. What were parents supposed to notice, and what difference would it have made if they (or their children)had reported anything?

The nurse told the parents to take Charleeni to the doctors because she was having difficulty walking and that doctor apparently missed a broken hip, or the parents forged documents, or the school records are wrong when they indicate the parents complied with the request for Charleeni to see a doctor.

Wow – I took a break today because I can’t get over poor Charleeni. I needed a day to distract my mind from all of the sadness that has comsumed me. When I worked for many childcare places, particularly in the Compton/Watts area (I know, I’ve told this before) that that was a hotbed of opportunities to observe abuse. Yet did anyone I worked with
make reports to me or CPS? Over 50 total employees only one older lady was highly observant and reported everything, as did I. The others’ excuses? “I’m afraid of retaliation” or “that’s so sad” or “I don’t want to affect my relationship with the parents or child”. Something lame. Basicly I concluded that no one cared. That simple. Now (over a year ago) I found this PBB site and I see that there are caring people everywhere, from all walks of life. In a familial kind of way, I love you all, because you choose to stay informed, or inform PBB (April’s the champ). We must keep this issue very alive, just like the Holocaust, because what these kids go thru daily, hourly, and sometimes more often is nothing short of their very own Holocaust. That is not understated, I believe. I think the tortured would agree with me.

Marquita, I think that your best bet would be to contact law enforcemnet or the M.E. that is working on the case. Since the mother is in another country (and obviously did’t give two shits about her precious daughter) and the father is dead and the step monster in jail – their is no one (at least to my knowledge) that would arrange a funeral. I don’t know how that would be handled in a case like this. Possibly, if the public got together and took donations for a funeral, there would be mention of it in the news – I have set up a Google alert for anything related to Charleeni. I have seen NOTHING. Did you know her – or are you just moved by the story?

Im hurt by this story. I can't begin to imagine the things this poor young girl must have endured. I hate to say it, but sometimes i wonder how there could really be such thing as God, when everyday, innocent children are being sexually abused, tortured, beaten, murdered. It really also makes me lose faith in humankind. Tsk.

I understand how you feel because I used to feel the same way. Whether there is a god or not is up for debate but the way I see things is that its people who do bad things. We are the ones who are responsible for these kinds of horrible things happening and its up to us as people to make them right and prevent them from happening.
