A reader’s request

Trench Reynolds

I got the following e-mail from a reader by the name of Debra and she asked me questions I have no answers for. So I thought I would post her e-mail here to see if you guys could help.

Child abusers make me ill. I am interested in finding a way to help, but I can’t seem to find anything that is out there. Do you know of any organization that pushes judges to be more strict or at least publish the names of the ones that let them off with a slap on the wrist? Do you know of any organizations out there that help with education to help break the cycle? I’m just so frustrate with reading about these cases and not finding anything out there trying to help.

Don’t let her down guys.

Unfortunately, I don’t know of any programs or organizations persay… but I will tell you what I do… Every election, I vote every single judge out, and I ask my family and friends to do the same. These judges have far too much power and authority and yet have no boundaries or reprocussions. I want them to know their jobs are not guarenteed and that they should value their positions. These men and woman make frivolous laws based on their rulings. Their job is to enforce laws, not make them. If everyone voted every judge every election, the odds of them taking their jobs seriously (IMO) would be very high. Also, obviously, you can write your local representatives, look up the judges in your area and their rulings and ask to make an appointment with them, and so on. Good luck, and keep us updated! If you hear of anything, post it so some of us who are interested can do the same!

Call your local sheriff’s office. I’m sure they’d have some information on where you could volunteer. Maybe a battered women shelter? That way you’d be helping the people who have already been through it at least.

    I feel like you totally!
I’m a stay at home (first time) mom for now and after my child was born and I had a nightmare through out pregnancy, my horror over child abuse was truly a lite. I almost lost my angel and here people just treat these blessings like trash??

well any my pregnancy almost killed us both so now we have been on the mend, I’m home and still not 100% (besides I want to be with her pre-k) I wanted to know what can I do from here?

for now I made a web-site gathering stories and making memorials for children. when she goes to school I intend to be A Court Appointed Special Advocate for children.

    heres the web-link

I was surprised how much these people care and offered to help me attend classes and such, so you might be interested in that.

Also (it might sound crazy) I found some great groups on Facebook that actually do get involved, This one seems to have allot of activity and many outraged people like us..a good starting point to send you in the right direction I hope.

I have found the link on the 2 link, CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates to be useful and accepted in not only my current community but in the one I used to live in. You can volunteer to go to Court with children who have little or no income and who rely on Court Appointed lawyers. CASA volunteers provide comfort, strength, validation and a voice for the child. Most often when the child goes into court to fact their abusers’, they are terrified to be face-to-face, CASA volunteer are trained to assist the child in that process and be their advocate at the same time. It is a practical and effective way to help children who otherwise might get “the short end of the stick” in the system. Hope this helps.

Become a child abuse advocate. The laws will only change if we make these Angels voice’s heard.

I felt this way too…drove me nuts and kept me up at night. As a single mother, I can understand the times when you feel overwhelmed and frustrated but I’d never hurt my child or let some man hurt my child either!

I am an artist. I realized that this is something I was good at and could use to make an impact. I volunteer at child advocacy centers, battered womens shelters, etc to paint murals and such on the walls for these centers. The last one I did took me a total of 6 months! A whole underwater scene with comical fish, buried treasures, an octupus fishing, etc…no white was left unpainted.

I since have received a letter from the director of that particular center saying that in the first 3 months of opening…12 children had been seen in the center (suspected of sexual abuse) and due to their comfort levels, they gave detailed accounts of their abuse which in turn caused 5 of the suspects to confess immediately. It’s scary to think that in my small town, 12 children were brought in for sexual abuse in a period of 3 months but it’s good to know they now have advocates and anything I can do to help with that….well, gives me a little teeny bit of peace.

Find your own personal gift and volunteer whenever you can!

Become a Guardian Ad Litem volunteer. These people get to speak on the child’s best interest in most DSS court cases and in some civil custody cases. Most GAL programs are sufficiently lacking in volunteers to help them properly assess what is best for the children.

Couldn’t we petition for a law to be passed that sends child abusers for jail for at least 20 plus years in cases where their is medical proof of abuse? It makes me ill and angry when ppl are basically made to stand in the corner by judges for such a heinous crime!! People lose custody of their pets b/c of negligence with only pictures for proof, why aren’t children protected the same way? maybe that would force judges to give out harsher punishment…

It is refreshing to read these outpourings of concern, because that means there are so many of us who having aching hearts for these children and have a gigantic desire to help them. It would be nice if we could collectively help, and in some small way, we are, by offering links, support, suggestions, etc.

    Yeh………………………….
see this is why electing judges is a very, very bad thing.

Because then some nut like the person requesting information here, puts up a blog naming people whom are doing their job,(usually). Then some other nut reads that blog, and goes and shoots the judge. Don’t believe me? Talk to ArmyofGod, talk to Concerned Women of America. To be honest we don’t have the facts in EVERY case, we only hear about the one or two, here and there that are particularly heinous, and even then, only a few of those was the judge incorrect; furthermore I can almost guarantee that 90% of people visiting the blog do not have a jurist doctorate.

Make that 89.9%; after seeing this post, I won’t be coming back to get my daily dose of crazy. I’ll just use reddit.

Actually “lady” if you even are a “lady” how about participating in Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Those kids are the kind of kids most at risk for abuse. How about you do that, instead of trying to “get back” at the system.

    Best of luck to you.

A good way to lower the amount of children being abused would be to push for a rebuttable presumtion of50/50 placement of all children of divorce. Since according to the U.S. Health and Human Services most children, by a 2 – 1 margin, are abused by their mothers this would be a good place to statrt!

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) or Guardian Ad Litem (same program different names depending on where you live) are great ways to be active in defending children in the court system. The bad news is that the abuse already occured, the good news is that you get to be their voice in court. If you have a special skill you are most needed. I was a GAL in FL and a CASA in GA. Loved it although I have sad stories that rival the ones contained here. Lots of happy endings with protected children, though…

Looks up on petitions.com James’ Law. It’s a law mandating sentences for child abusers and people who don’t report child abuse.

if you really want to help the kids, become a foster parent. work directly with these abused little ones. child abuse has always been here and will continue to be here. it’s easy to condemn people for not reporting abuse…but many times they aren’t aware of what goes on behind closed doors. easy to condemn judges…yet they are bound to go by what the law mandates. a parent can seem totally in compliance with the court and the child seems ready to return home. judges are not mind readers….there’s always the one that cracks and kills or maims.
become a foster parent…give completely of yourself to a child and watch him/her thrive. when the time comes to terminate the parents rights, adopt the child. even if you save just one child’s life….you’ve made a difference.

Gee Dave, what a vitriolic, narrow-minded viewpoint! If you think Big Brother/Big Sisters is the way to go, then you need to do your homework..there are have been quite a few adults who volunteer for that who end up abusing those kids. If, in fact, you ARE a guy. The websites posted have NOTHING to do with judges, you myopic “guy”! It’s about assisting with the abused child and hopefully, also help break the cycle of abuse. Are you a child abuser? Sounds like you are. You come up again on this thread and there will alot of input from other, whom you apparently don’t know about yet.

After reading the comments in my email box I had to come back, and apologize.

The way the person presented them self in this blog, with her letter, made me think she wanted to “get back at a judge” whom she thought gave out a bad sentence.

Furthermore, How dare you accuse me of being a child abuser when you don’t even know me.

BTW, I was referencing her comment ” I’m just so frustrate with reading about these cases”

she’s referring to cases, not children. Unless she think’s its ok to refer to juvenile humans as abstract objects.
