trianing the puppy/dog in potty skills isn’t much different than teaching a child. as long as the care giver remains vigilant in showing the dog/child where, when and how to go to the bathroom, they’ll eventually catch on.
as far as becoming desensitized to the odor, i guess it could happen…but come on…the VISUAL…piles of poop and urine spots from the animals (sagging, fully loaded diapers on the babes)…piles of garbage building up inside the home….food with bugs and green stuff growing on it….babes with 6′ of built up crud and grime on them…setting the odor aspect aside and just taking in the visual of it all….how does one live like that? disgusting.

and if you look at the ingredients on some of the Smell B gone stuff, it will list something like apple cider vinegar, but charge way more.

Another alternative is to crate train them, our last puppy slept in a crate at night, and was taken outside first thing in the morning to do her business. By the time she was too big for the crate, she had enough control to hold it alll night. dogs will not go potty where they sleep, unless given no other alternative (such as being locked up in a small cage 24/7). It did take a little bit of effort on our part (as did the rest of her training, she had obedience training, but didn’t really learn that much more there than I had already taught her, and she was well-behaved enough to go trail riding with us, very respectful of the horses, and would come when called off-leash. And she would be considered a “dangerous” breed, she was Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rottweiler and Dalmatian, but she was a sweetheart, and I made sure she had training from young puppyhood, and knew who was boss in the relationship).

Being a human owned by a pooch (tells you how spoiled my mutt is, doesn’t it?), cleaning up the mess is part of the solution. Dogs tend to go where the ‘mark’ is, so successful housebreaking usually incorporates some form of scent marker ‘eraser’ that can be easily done with apple cider vinegar. (Sure pet stores sell some cleaners that do the job too, but really, why pay more?) So after cleaning it up, go over it with the vinegar to make sure the pooch doesn’t smell the ‘go potty here’ marker. (Another good tip is to take the caca outside and praise the pooch for sniffing it there – positive reinforcement of where to go HELPS a lot!)

It’s a howling shame though the parents couldn’t take care of their kids, not to mention the dogs.

He’s kind of strange on it, some days he wants to watch it, and sometimes he doesn’t, but he loves his shoes, and his Gabba clothes, and the little stuffed ones I got for him last year for Christmas. I sometimes think I might like it more than him, must be the college student in me (you know they sell Yo Gabba Gabba stuff at Hot Topic as well, apparently it is quite the rage among young college students). When he has an owie he always wants me to draw either Muno or Foofah on the bandage (it gets him to leave it on for a little while longer than without, and they’re pretty easy to draw actually, plus, he’s not much of a critic, he just thinks it’s cool, lol). He has both the DVDs, and usually wants to watch it when it comes on Nick Jr right at his bedtime (and I mean what was called Noggin, they changed the name, and time zone hits right at bedtime for him).

actually, it is possible to become desensitized to noxious smells over time, and that is even for people that don’t fry their receptors doing illegal stuff. and they might have noticed, but it does say they were “passed out” when the cops got there, so it probably would have taken several hours after the “came to” for them to notice anything, if it wasn’t forcefully brought to their attention by the cops showing up on their doorstep.

rule #1. if you have a dog or dogs that are constantly making caca in your house, get rid of them. rule #2. if you have a dog or dogs that are constantly making caca in your house and you just can’t BEAR to get rid of the little mutts….keep them….take them outside frequently to do their business….clean up the caca as soon as you see/smell/step in it. wash the area…spray some air freshener…open the windows.
do these people have no sense of smell? you would think at some point in time, substance abusers or not, they would notice their was dog shit throughout the house; there’s no food; and the kids are naked and missing.

Those poor kids are damned lucky that the neighbors called the police and they were seen before some unsavory character decided to pick them up.

And I’m with you, Jenn… My little guy is a holy terror, but even if I did have a dog, there wouldn’t be dog shit in my house. And we oly have one cat (the poor thing… His Holy Terrorness chases her everywhere!) and she poops in her box. The only think we have to dodge around here are matchbox cars and mega-blocks.

You know, my little guy gets into things too (including food when he wants a snack), and moves his bed around his room, and loves to play with our chihuahua, but our dog craps outside, and he still has his bed in his room, just sometimes not where I put it. Poor little guys, maybe now they can have a chance at a normal life without having to dodge chihuahua crap and “passed out” parents. Oh, and the only time our little guy is out of the yard Power Wheel or not, he has clothes on, and either my husband or myself is with him.
And sure, why not chihuahuas, don’t take up as mush room as pits, and think they are pits anyway. All the attitude, in a convenient pocket size.
