Mother convicted in sons’ deaths wants new trial:
Susan Smith to me is the original and quintessential Bad Breeder, or PBB if you will.
If you don’t know the story Smith was convicted of killing her two kids, 3-year-old Michael Daniel Smith and 14-month-old Alexander Tyler Smith, by strapping them in a car and letting the car roll into a lake.
She supposedly killed her kids because she was in a relationship with a man who didn’t want to have kids. Then on top of it she went on national TV telling the story that her kids were abducted in a carjacking by a ‘black man’.
Eventually she confessed to killing her kids and was sentenced to life behind bars. In my opinion she should have been given the death penalty but here we are.
This all happened in the early 90′s. However recently she has requested a new trial on the grounds that she had inadequate counsel and that the trial was ‘unfair’.
Unfair? You know what was unfair? What was unfair was two kids sliding into a lake inside their car crying for their mother who was more interested in her man than her own flesh and blood.
I don’t care that she was molested as a child.
And do you notice that not once does she regret killing her children. She’s only trying to get out of jail on technicalities.

I hope she doesn’t get a new trial. Even ASKING for a new trial shows that she doesn’t regret murdering her children. If she cared about anyone besides herself, she would carry out that sentence and thank God that she wasn’t sentenced to death. Maybe she would reach out to other single moms in distress and encourage them to seek help and stand on their own two feet rather than looking for men to “save” them…if she actually cared about anyone but herself and felt any guilt or remorse for what she did.

Speaking of the Smith boy’s father, he never got a chance to hold them again or say goodbye. They were so badly decomposed by time Susan stopped telling her lies that they had to just put them in the casket. So he never got any closure whatsoever.
The Bible says if you hurt a child it is better if a millstone were tied around your neck and you were drowned in the uttermost part of the sea. Perhaps this wasn’t the right forum for me to begin such a discussion, but holding an alternate view of the matter, I feel the obligation all the same to clarify my position.
I believe the courts made the correct decision by sentencing her to life in prison, for two reasons. First, the prosecutors believed they saw the potential in her for repentance, and they wanted to allow her that. And second, we’re living in a society here and it’s not right for someone with the demonstrated potential for homicide (in this case double) to walk free among us, as it would both dishonor the memory of her dead children and perhaps endanger the public at large.
That said, there’s a difference between condemning someone else’s behavior, and condemning the person as a whole. Condemning an individual outright is beyond any of our scope at this point and, I feel, actually does spiritual harm to you when you do so.
On the other hand, I understand that this is a website devoted to just that. That’s why we’re on this website, right? To read about the horrible things others have done and marvel in indignation, not necessarily to achieve any deeper understanding of what precipitated their monstrous actions, and not by extension to contemplate human nature as it perhaps applies to ourselves. So I understand that this is not the correct forum for an intelligent discussion along those lines to occur, and that it was most likely pointless to try to make that happen.

mymelody, While I respect your beliefs (as being *your* beliefs), I’m fairly certain that Trench didn’t intend this forum as an excuse for anyone to come in here proselytizing to everyone commenting on his posts. (However, I’m sure he’ll correct me if I’m wrong.)
Now, I’m not saying that you shouldn’t voice your beliefs, others here do it all the time. But do not presume to go onto anyone else’s blog and tell the folks there how they should think or feel about a woman murdering her babies via *your* religious beliefs.
My understanding (again, I’m sure Trench will correct me if I’m wrong) of why he created this site is to make people aware of the horrors that children suffer every day at the hands of the ones who are supposed to care for them, love them, and take care of them. Perhaps it will inspire someone to get out and actually do something about it, like take in foster children (as many of the ladies here have done), or to help spread awareness of abuse and help people to learn how to avoid it, how to fight it by campaigning for tougher laws and stricter sentencing, campaigning against organizations and groups that promote abuse, (all of which I try to do), or even just to be more grateful for their own children (as I know that every regular poster here absolutely *is*).
Not one of us, after reading all the horrible things that parents do to their innocent and defenseless babies, has a shred of pity left for any of these abusers/murderers. We just have a lot of sorrow for their victims, and gratitude that our children are safe and well-loved. What these “parents” do is by choice. What Susan Smith did was by choice. She could have allowed their father to have custody if she didn’t want them anymore. They could have been well-loved and well taken care of by their father, but she chose to murder them instead. Her two beautiful little boys didn’t have a choice.

MyMelody, I am a Christian too, BUT she knew it was WRONG, and tormented/murdered her children for
- A man she wanted but no longer has
- Mentally, emotionally brutalized her husband at the time and still is deeply affected
- Killed 2 very tiny, helpless children who ARE NOT IN THE POSITION TO ASK FOR LIFE AGAIN.
Many lifes lost or forever damaged by her selfishness.

Tough as it may be at times, I will remind all Christians that we have been commanded not to judge anyone else. Judgment belongs to God.
No one but Susan herself is ever going to understand what horrible urge compelled her to do such a thing. But if her incarceration has led her to better understanding of herself and ultimately to repentance then may God be praised all the same.

She had an abortion as a teen and tried to use that to her defense as to why she killed her kids. Her kids were decaying by time they were found. She lied as they decomposed at the bottom of that lake. They were sleeping when she rolled the car into the lake, but don’t you think they woke up in the pitch black as water poured into the car, screaming for their mother, confused and terrified and wondering where mommy was?
then the water closed over their little heads and they were trapped. They couldn’t get out of their car seats and they panicked taking in mouthfuls of water as the oxygen was squeezed out of their lungs. What a horrible way to die. I hope someone kills her in prison. I really do.

When my little Lu-ster was about 15 months old or so…my little Dee was about 3-4 years old…and Lu-ster hated car rides. She would cry and cry in the car. Little Dee would reach over and hold her little hand. Big sis helping to ease the fear of lil sis. Big sis trying to console and comfort lil sis.

My 9 yr old daughter has so much empathy, she can’t even watch old rescue 911 episodes where kids are hurt, she cries and leaves. I want my 3 yr old to sleep in her room instead of mine BUT, she would freak out over his night terrors.
I don’t know if she could handle it well, emotionally.

My toddler often will hold my baby’s hand when he’s crying, trying to console him. If that doesn’t work, he’ll dance around and be silly to make him laugh.

I would think that once the water begin filling up their lungs, those babies woke up in utter terror and their mother was nowhere to be found. Drowning is a horrendous way to die.

This upsets me every time. I keep thinking what if those little boys were awake? Did they cry for their mommy? Did they wonder where she was and why she wasn’t helping them? How scared were they? I want to cry at the thought – what she did was horrific on the grandest of scales.
I want to be all Christian and forgiving and stuff, but I find it really hard. She can sit in that jail cell and rot for all I care. In fact, I hope she’s made a few good ‘lady friends’ who use and abuse her at every turn. Being abused (sexually or otherwise) as a child is not a reason to kill your own kids! I’m sorry, but that excuse has been used a gazillion times and it still doesn’t sit right with me. If she had used it as an excuse for turning into a sexual predator herself, I might have bought it… but this just sounds like a ploy to receive a ‘get out of jail free’ card.

I can’t even imagine the mindset of a person who has NO THOUGHT to her kid’s feelings! My 3 yr old has night terrors, but he doesn’t remember them in the morning. He screams things like “I want to get out of here!!” or “STOP!!! It HURTS!!” and I want to make it stop but I can’t. I hate the feeling. I can’t even hold him during the terror, he pulls away…
I can’t even imagine not caring when kids are REALLY crying or screaming for the *real* pain to stop and mom just doesn’t care.

Lori… I go thru that as well with my 2 yr old daughter she doesn’t say anything but she cries out in her sleep and I can not hold her or calm and it devistates me. I have a hard time even letting her cry herself to sleep when she is overly tired because I know she has issues with her dreams. I could never hurt her!

I can’t actually think of a crime against a child that isn’t horrible and that doesn’t make me sick to think about any child having to deal with.
I will say this, though… pedophilia isn’t “curable”, and so a pedophile caught abusing a child should receive the death penalty. Anyone who cripples, or in any other way permanently damages, a child should receive the death penalty. Anyone who murders a child should be given the death penalty.
As a tax-payer, I’m not at all pleased with having to support people like this, but don’t want them out on the street to harm others.

The problem with moving to some of these other countries is that they have their own abuses that are common place. China has a HUGE problem with child trafficking. Parents there who have unreported children (they have a limit on the number of children most families are allowed to have, and families are taxed for additional children) have no legal recourse when their male children are abducted and sold to childless couples or into the child sex trade. The families that can scratch up enough money will sometimes hire a private investigator to get them back.
Children face horrible abuses and problems everywhere you can think of going.
