Sexual assault and murder in Michigan

It is December 6th in New Baltimore District Court in New Baltimore, MI.  Lauren Furneaux sits with her head buried in her mother’s chest and surrounded by 40 supporters wearing “Justice for Lily” t-shirt, as Renee Marie King (26) took her seat.  It is silent except for Lauren’s sobs.
The 2 women are not strangers, Renee is Lauren’s daughter Lily Lynette Furnneaux-Wolfenbarger’s stepmother and the woman accused of sexually assaulting and murdering her on November 20th.
On November 20th at around 9 am Lauren dropped off Lily (2) to her stepmother at the home she shared with Lily’s father and her 3 children from a previous relationship.  Around 2pm that afternoon Renee called 911 and reported an “unconscious child”.  She stated that as she was showering with Lily, her knee had given out and she lost her balance and fell on Lily.  The autopsy results showed blunt force trauma to the head and severe vaginal trauma.  Authorities believe Renee raped the toddler with some sort of object before hitting her in the head, and causing her death.  She has offered explanations about the head injury but never offered anything to explain the vaginal trauma.  She only pleads her innocence.
Lily’s father, Jeff Wolfenbarger, is standing by his wife.  Calling periodically to check on the status of her case.  Despite the fact that he had filed for divorce in October and Renee filed for PPO against him around the same time.
Renee has been in Macomb County Jail since November 20th and has been charged with felony murder, with a life sentence; criminal sexual conduct, with a mandatory 25-year sentence, and first- degree child abuse, a felony with a maximum sentence of 15 years.
Renee’s attorney Richard Glanda has requested a 2nd autopsy by an independent medical examiner.  He had this to say about his client, “She’s saddened by this incident, and she denies all allegation,” reiterating her statement that she lost her balance and fell on the toddler in the shower.
I don’t know… something stinks in Michigan, my friends.  I personally cannot understand how she fell on the little girl in the shower and caused her death.  I mean exactly how did the vaginal trauma occur from the fall.  The fact that this man can stand there and defend this woman he wanted to divorce a month before makes me sick.  That is your daughter, your flesh and blood.
There are rumors that Lily has resisted going to her father’s and seemed to fear Renee and that she had returned home often with bruises.  But there are no “official” reports of that.

    On May 14th, 2008 I gave
    birth to the love of my life Lily Lynette. Looking at your daughter for
    the first time is the best thing in the whole world. A child is hope.
    They are our future. I held my daughter for 2 years 6 months and 6
    days. On November 20, 2010, Lily’s world ended. Along with hers so did
    numerous other people’s. My everything was taken from me on that day.

    Today it has been 1 year 4 months and 21 days since I last held my
    daughter. That morning I made so many promises to her. I promised her
    we would go to Splash Village when there was snow on the ground. I
    promised her Barney would come to her third birthday. But the promise
    that I was most adamant about was that one day she would not have to go
    to Daddy and Nay’s house. The last time I seen my daughter alive was
    her being handed over to her dad and crying saying please mommy don’t
    make me go. He walked away with her screaming and crying trying to get
    back to me.
    My daughter was my world. Every second of every day I
    had her I spent with her. She had a smile that would light up the
    world.
    Renee you cut down everything I did as a mother. From
    breastfeeding to cutting her hair you did everything out of spite.
    Telling a 2 year old that you will continue to basically butch her hair
    because she is breastfeeding, what is wrong with you?
    Renee, the day
    you decided to take my daughter’s life, did you even think of Aubrey,
    Isabella, and Wayne? Did you think that you would not have the chance
    to watch your children grow as well. I continue to pray for your
    children every day and know that they are better off without you. As I
    will never see Lily’s first day of school, first date, first prom, her
    graduate, her wedding, her children, neither will you. You decided to
    take my world from me that day. So when you sit on the tape crying
    about how you want to go home because jail is too hard, just think
    Renee, you have a whole lifetime of prison. Have fun. And now I can
    finally tell my daughter because you will never go where she is, “No
    more Nay.” Life in prison is too easy for you. You took my daughter’s
    life, now the justice system gets to take yours. God Bless you because I
    don’t think they will very much where you are headed.”

        No problem. Like you, being from Michigan this case hit really really close to home. Especially when Lily was only a matter of months younger than my middle child who is also my only daughter.

    Justice for Lily has been served! Renee has been found guilty of all three charges brought against her. She won’t get death in Michigan, but at least we can rest assured that she will not be able to abuse, kill, or rape another child again in her lifetime.

      Thanks for the update, Suzee.  I was horrified when I read about this case and hoping for justice for Lily and her mother.  The Family Court judge was an idiot and when asked about the case he said it was a long time ago and he didn’t remember the details.  Couldn’t have been all that long ago, Lily was just two when she died.

    I’m from Michigan, and I also belong to the Justice For Lily facebook group. Her mother is an amazing woman, raising money and donating it to various charities in Lily’s honor. I believe she’s only 24 or 25. A lot to deal with at such a young age. Hard to deal with at any age.

    Alright, after reading about the case and the incident,I have several questions.
    Why wasn’t the children and family services called on any of the family members involved in this case? I know for a fact that if you suspect foul play between your child the child’s parent you have the right to get involved.. It is your Civil Right to get the proper authorities involved. Did any one step in and take action? I am not sticking up for anyone, as an outsider I just see all fingers pointing to the stepmother.. And if the Father filed for divorce in October why was the child allowed back over to the stepmothers?WOW and has the stepmothers children been examined and questioned?

      Donya, You’re not alone on this board hon, I lost my 4 month old son on June 28,2010, a meer 2 weeks after my first son’s birthday and 2 weeks after their dr appt, where they were both declared healthy. If you feel like you need to talk, I am totally here :) God bless!

    I think they should question the father, because if I were that baby girl’s father I’d have nothing to do with that woman! I don’t want to say it because I am sure everyone has thought of it or at least said it themselves. If your child is scared or resistant to want to be around someone, wouldn’t you consider it a “red flag” … I personally wouldn’t have left my daughter alone (I have a 2 yr old) with someone she was afraid of. As well as outward evidence my child was being abused. Let’s face it, some bruises can be easily explained when it comes to young children (my little rascals get themselves into everything!!!), but there are others that send the hairs on the back of your neck or gut tight feelings that tell a mother “no way, we won’t be around coming around here anymore baby girl”.

    It’s just down right crazy and this story makes me absolutely sick. She is in denial and she needs to just come out with the truth about what happened. I hate cases like this…we all already speculate what you’ve done. Don’t you think you owe it to your victim to tell the truth. I mean since you’re going to be put away for a very very long time for what you’ve done you might as well come out with it then.

    I mean you can explain how this poor baby girl “may” have gotten blunt force to the head, but what about the other injuiries. And that sick dad (who actually wants to put up a fund for college under his daughter’s name) is defending the monster who killed his daughter!!! It’s a sick and disgraceful world we live in and really all of our children can’t even live in it anymore…they are more or less surviving it. IT’S SICK!!!

        Actually, I myself am not an atheist, but good try. Why do you space your comments so weird? It makes it hard to read. I really don’t think things are declining or getting worse, they are just being reported and talked about more. Advances in technologies makes you more likely to hear about something. It amazes me that sexual abuse is still such a stigma for the victims and they are the ones that are ostracized versus the perpetrator still in America. I think our fucked up views on sexuality and repression needs to be stripped away, not built up more.

          Actually studies have been done showing that the increased exposure to violence and sexual content in TV, movies & music has a densensitizing effect on the young people exposed to it . It sexualizes children much earlier than they should be, hence you see 10 year olds wearing makeup and suggestive , revealing clothing and 8 years olds wanting to, not to mention elementary children mimicking gang bangers and shooting classmates, siblings and/or parents.
          Also it has been proven that exposure to pornography incites those who view it to commit sexual acts they otherwise wouldn’t. This is why those with a load of child pornography on their computers or in their mail are arrested. Pornography on the web is a huge plague.
          And internet chat rooms are full of predators looking to hook up with children. Look it up.
          If you think this is simply more coverage in the press you are mistaken.
          Being a child of the sixties I am all for consenting adults engaging in unrepressed sexual activity however that does not include those who prey upon children.
          The stigma for blame in childhood sexual abuse is laid upon the perpetrator, in rape cases there are, I must confess, still some unenlightened among us.
          In my opinion being sexually unrepressed and acting like a tramp are different things entirely. Being sexually unrepressed also does not give a male the right to engage in sexual activity with an unwilling female or a child.
          I space my comments so that each separate subject of thought is in a different sentence or paragraph, as it should be.
          If you have trouble following that format perhaps the difficulty is with you?
          BTW, before you assault my intelligence again, I have a documented IQ of 140. What’s yours?

        I agree again. You don’t have to be a religious zealot to know that decency, empathy, and compassion are good traits. Research has shown that many of the serial rapists own stacks and stacks of pornography. Doesn’t mean that everyone who looks at porn will become a rapist. But, porn IS a common theme among sex offenders. Violent rap artists are idolized by many street gangs (well, until they get themselves shot).

        Your opinion didn’t say that everyone MUST go to church or they’ll be evil mass murderers, child beaters, and rapists. Simply put, we’ve moved away from values that protect human life to selfishness that doesn’t care about anyone except ones self.

        I am not an atheist. I do believe in a creator. And, I do believe that he provided good principles to live our lives by…. Love others as you love yourself. Don’t kill. Don’t steal. Humble yourselves and serve others. Who gets hurt following those principles? The extinction of compassion can only lead to bedlam.

    People judge me and call me a bitch, but this is exactly why my child does not see his biological father. I may be hurting members of his father’s family by keeping my precious angel from seeing them, but I will never be the one crying in a courtroom because of the actions of the people his father chooses to hang around with. Poor baby. I hate to blame, I honestly do, but the mother should have kept her daughter at home the first time her daughter acted wary of being at her father’s house. My heart breaks for her though. Rest in peace baby Lily.

      Lily’s mother had no choice but to allow the father visitation. It was ordered by a judge in Lapeer County. Lauren, Lily’s mom, had been trying to get the courts to see the bruises and the way Lily acted around the dad and step-mom but the judge wouldn’t listen, instead saying it was the father’s right to be part of his daughter’s life. Bet he feels like crap now.

      What is going on is that there is much evil afoot and it is increasing exponentially.
      The majority of the younger generation have not been ‘churched’ growing up so they are lacking a moral compass.
      Schools no longer teach or even encourage virtues such as reliability, honesty, patiotism, duty, honor etc.
      Instead children are raised by television where they are bombarded by over 200,000 images of violence and sexual content by the age of 18.
      By having so many latchkey children with both parents working who are too tired or too self involved to actually teach the children anything and add in alcohol and drug abuse and you get people who are violent and perverse.
      I am a baby boomer and no prude but I draw the line at the lack of basic decency, dignity and self respect.
      Some of the music videos on are basically pornographic.
      I was astonished to see so many young women who blatantly spread their legs for videos and photo ops.
      Really, this is lacking in self respect & dignity.
      The movies shown on TV are full of violence and perversity and the internet is rife with pornography of the worse kind.
      All in the name of free speech.
      We are and have robbed at least 2 generations now of their childhoods by allowing this.
      Basically we have let a lesser culture, one of drugs, gangs, violence and denigration of women, as seen on TV and on the internet, steal their innocence very young. Too young.
      That some lack even the basic decency common to human beings is not, then surprising.
      And yet we allow it to continue because we expect our elected officials to take care of it rather than speaking out.
      When you have even priests molesting children and top music celebs like Beyonce acting like the basest of whores dancing in their videos what can we expect?
      Kids on their own do not realize that this is not really acceptible behavior.
      Consequently it becomes part of their popular culture and breeds more perversity.
      There you have it in a nutshell.

        Clevo–I agree with everything you said. All of it. My 7 & 8 y/o sons are NOT permitted to watch MTv. They do not surf the web without adult supervision. They are NOT permitted to watch prime time TV with all of the drugs, violence, and sexuality. We do not use vulgar language around our children (and not much any where). I listen to whatever music they want to hear and will censor if I feel it is necessary. I do not let my kids listen to hip hop because of all of the violent and sexual themes. We do our best to teach them that human life is very valuable and that girls are not “hot” but prefer to be called pretty. With everything that we do to protect our children and teach them decency, they still come home from school and talk about boobs, butts, hot chicks, and sexy babes. I can only imagine what they’d be like if we turned a blind eye to the things they do in our presence. I know they’re not going to be perfect, but I pray that we’re planting and nurturing seeds of goodness and kindness and empathy that will grow as they do.

She knows shes loved and she trusts me. My husband and I are separated but he is a good dad and never would hurt our child and neither would I. We have grown up seeing tv and videos and that has nothing to do with the people we are. We know right from wrong. This person obviously doesn’t.

    At first I thought no way this chick did it. Someone else was sexually abusing this baby and because of the head injury, stepmom is getting blamed. But the newspaper states her story doesn’t flow with things found in the home and several items were turned over for forensic testing. Soooo…. I guess if she is innocent, we’ll find out after her trial…
