Coroner investigating parents’ role in death of obese boy

Inquest examines parents’ role in obese boy’s death

Obese boy’s death examined by coroner

3 years ago, a 10 year old boy from Newcastle died from complications related to morbid obesity. At only 7 years old, he weighed 50kg (110lbs) and had a body mass index double of what it should have been. A NSW coroner is now investigating his parents for possible child abuse/neglect and the role they played in their son’s decline and eventual demise.

As far back as 2007, the boy had been in and out of hospital with obesity related problems, and his parents had been provided with a weight management plan. Yet he put on an additional 6 kg shortly after leaving John Hunter hospital.

He had been the subject of several reports to DoCS and other authorities because of his parents’ drug use and his obesity-related health issues for which his parents refused to seek medical help. The boy suffered from sleep apnoea (like snoring, but the boy stopped breathing for short periods of time) and appointments were made for him to have his tonsils and adenoids removed, and various other weight management specialists.  The inquest heard that many of the appointments were missed and that the boy never got the help he needed.

His parents also were slack on his school attendance. In his short education, the boy had missed 103 days of the 2010 school year. The parents blamed his sleep apnoea (yeah cos it’s totally the kid’s fault), but when they were threatened with criminal action, they promised to improve his attendance rate.

The exact circumstances surrounding the boy’s death are unclear, but he was found slumped over on a lounge before he stopped breathing while en route to the hospital. After 12 minutes without oxygen, he had suffered a massive brain injury and was put on life support, where he died a few days later.

Now, I know this may be a touchy subject for the American audience. But here goes…letting your child get so fat that they have trouble breathing IS child abuse! The kid wasn’t out buying the wrong sort of foods, this was 100% on the parents! The parents were shoveling garbage into their kid, enabling the bad habits and then trying to cover it up by keeping him away from doctors and school. Just like how starving a child can lead to malnutrition and other health issues, feeding a kid McDonald’s and KFC everyday will also cause major health issues.

This boy’s death was 1000% preventable.

The inquest continues.

Murder, Fraud, And Possible Gender Discrimination

There is so much that needs to be said about this case and I am curious as to whether anyone else believes that there is some kind of gender discrimination here. But I’m getting ahead of myself. This is just the introduction. Onto the case. Unfortunately, just as last time, this case happened in Florida as well. This case is a bit more confusing than most, but still horrific. It reminds me of the Casey Anthony case. And I don’t know if it’s gender discrimination or what, but there is definitely something wrong going on with this case.

Dontrell K. Melvin was once a happy, healthy baby boy. Around July, 2011, he was 5 months old–almost 6 months. He disappeared that month. His mother, Brittney Sierra, claimed that she reported the child as missing immediately. She said that her boyfriend at the time, Calvin Melvin, took their son on a walk and she phoned police immediately upon his returning without Dontrell. Court documents do show that the police met with her in July, 2011, but the police officers say that they do not specifically remember why she called the police.

However, knowing her son was “missing”, Sierra applied for and received food stamps and other benefits with Dontrell’s name listed as a dependent. In one she claimed near December 2011 that was involved with getting Christmas toys for children, it was claimed that Dontrell was 9 and a half months old. this is a little bit more than suspicious. Why she didn’t continue to phone the police as her child was missing, and then why she claimed him fraudulently on some benefits programs does not per se speak of an innocent mind.

Calvin Melvin denied the claims that Brittney Sierra had made, pointing the finger at her and saying that he didn’t do anything and that Sierra was crazy, cutting herself and saying that she didn’t “want the fucking baby anymore”. Sierra responded telling police of how Calvin could suffocate the child. But when asked where the child could be, it was Calvin’s location that was correct. He said that the child could be in the backyard of their former home and even gave a diagram to police. It was there that little Dontrell’s skeletal remains were found buried. Both parents have been arrested for crimes such as child neglect and child cruelty. Calvin was given a harsher charge and also two charges of falsifying statements to police.

The medical examiner confirmed that the skeletal remains were Dontrell’s, and the death was ruled a homicide by unknown violent means. Both parents plead not guilty to the charges. Recently, Sierra has not only had her charges reduced, but she has also been released on bail. Her lawyer fought hard for this because she is pregnant with her fourth child. The other two children are currently in state care. This whole incident started when there was an anonymous CPS report of Sierra smoking marijuana and verbally abusing her children. When the CPS social worker showed up to investigate, there were two children instead of three, and that’s where all of this began.

I’m really upset that this woman is being released from jail. She not only failed to continually report her child–her baby–missing so that anyone who would hear her would take her seriously and her child would be found, but she also fraudulently received benefits because she used her dead child as a dependent when he obviously wasn’t there. Loving parents generally don’t do that. They generally care about their children”s well being to the point where they’d start asking questions and demanding answers if their child could not be found and if the child just disappeared one day while the father was allegedly out walking with the child. Loving parents don’t wait 18 months (!!!) until CPS comes along and notices a child missing, ignoring the fact. They just don’t.

So here we have a child who is dead, a mother who did nothing about anything that happened to her child and maybe even participated in causing it and she is out with a tracker connected to her ankle because she is pregnant with her fourth child. Oh, and did I mention that she is afraid that the child will be taken by the state? Imagine that! Sorry lady, but who knows what will happen if you keep this baby. They might go “missing” too and you may not report it until God-knows-when!

Now, I know I don’t have all of the facts that the court has. I can obviously only go on the information that I am given. However, in this case, I have so many unanswered questions and am so confused by our “justice” system. These two people though will more than likely be known in the court of the people, so hopefully no matter how this case turns out, they are closely monitored for the rest of their lives. This should never have happened. Ever.

SA sperm flinger goes to jail after neglecting his diabetic daughter to death

SA dad jailed over fatal neglect

Parents deny killing teenage daughter

Richard Edward (50), a South Australian sperm slinger, has been jailed for allowing his 14 year old diabetic daughter Dawn to die. Her incubator Debra Marlene Edward (54) has avoided jail.

It is alleged that Dawn weighed only 28 kg when she died in August 2009. On top of having Type 1 diabetes, she was apparently physically disabled, which would explain why she could not get to food or a doctor on her own. Her cause of death was hyperglycemia and dehydration.

According to the judge presiding over the case, Dawn was very ill in the week before she died. Yet her breeders did nothing to help her.

Not that this has anything to do with the case, but the breeders were intellectually disabled, as well as their five children including Dawn. The sperm slinger was controlling and domineering, while the incubator was apathetic, choosing to spend time in her room watching TV.  He made all the decisions, while the incubator regretted not standing up to her husband enough. Umm, how hard can it be to stand up to someone with a maximum IQ of 70?

The sperm slinger Richard was charged with mere manslaughter and was sentenced to a pitiful 4 years and six months, with a non parole period of 3 years and 7 months. The useless incubator Debra was placed on a 3 year good behaviour bond, after suspending a 3 year jail period.

These people should never have been allowed to breed. There must have been signs that they could not live independently or look after one child, let alone 5. Not to mention that whatever disability they had, it was obviously genetic for all five of their kids to be disabled too.

RIP Dawn.

Welcome to the Day Late and Dollar Short News. I’m your host Trench Reynolds. Tonight I post a story that happened last week. Oh wait, that’s every post I do just about.

Anyway some years ago I used to run a site called MyCrimeSpace. It detailed a lot of the crimes that were being perpetrated on social networking sites. I had a feature called the ‘Red Forman Dumbass Award’. It was awarded to anyone who would post evidence of their crimes on sites like MySpace and Facebook. It was named after the character Red Forman from the TV show ‘That 70s Show’. If you’re unfamiliar with Red here is some of his greatest hits.

I’ve tried to model my parenting after him and I’ve kind have been successful with it.

So for one night only I’ve resurrected Red to give one more award to Aisha Jean Clark of Tampa, Florida. Not only did she allegedly dangle her baby from a balcony that was 12 feet off of the ground but she also posted a photo of it to social photo sharing app Instagram.

Friends of hers who saw the picture called police and when police showed up at her doorstep they asked if she knew why they were there. She supposedly got her iPad and showed them the picture. Her defense is…

“I was mad and I was making a point. I can do what I want with my baby. Nobody can stop me.”

Except, you know, the police.

And like many social networking criminals at least one friend has defended her.

“She just made a mistake, man. She just made a big mistake. She didn’t know it was going to get her in trouble like this,” he said.

It’s not just a mistake when someone purposely dangles a baby from a balcony.

So for her criminal prowess Ms. Clark has been awarded the Red Forman Dumbass Award.

Baby Toni dies from being bound and gagged

Couple ‘killed daughter, 1, after strapping her in a car seat for 15 hours with a blanket stuffed in her mouth to keep her from crying’

Warrants reveal details of toddler’s death by suffocation

Thanks go to Lucy on this one.

A tiny baby girl by the name of Toni Maurie Gwynn (17 months) is dead. Her breeders, Antonio and Heather (from now on, known as Heifer) Gwynn (both 22) stand accused of killing her by strapping her into a car seat and shoving a blanket into her mouth to stifle her cries.

The sperm flinger Antonio Gwynn

The sperm flinger Antonio Gwynn

Heather Gwynn obviously hasn't missed a meal.

Heather (Heifer) Gwynn obviously hasn’t missed a meal.

The mismatched couple allegedly strapped little Toni into her car seat, at their Eden NC home, and left her there for 15 hours without food or water. Sometime during those 15 hours, Toni’s DNA splatterer strode in and stuffed a blanket into the tiny girl’s mouth in order to muffle her crying. Gee, dickhead, did you ever try unstrapping her from the car seat and giving her something to eat and drink? Then putting her to bed in her own bed (not a car seat)? What on earth were they doing for 15 hours straight anyway? Some say they were making more victims. Yuck.

Anyhoo, baby Toni was found unconscious the next day. Her DNA donors rang paramedics and cooked up some lame excuse as to why she wasn’t breathing. Sadly, Toni gained her angel wings shortly after arriving at Morehead Memorial Hospital.

The fat heifer’s parents, Chris and Sue Paul, explained that they tried to help out, they knew that Toni and her two siblings (aged 5 and 5 months) were being abused and they’d made phone call after phone call to Social Services but to no avail. They recounted that last Christmas, they brought over some presents for the kids, so that they could actually have a Christmas, but Heifer more or less slammed the door in their faces. Chris further added that he thought she knew if he and Sue saw how bad things were at their house, that they wouldn’t have put up with it. Heifer had distanced herself from her parents, probably so that she could abuse her kids to her cholesterol-encrusted heart’s content.

Some more fat ugly heiferness. Fat heifer cries at being caught.

Some more fat ugly heiferness. Fat Heifer cries at being caught.

Heifer’s neighbours, surprise surprise, knew all about the abuse and only now have come out about it!! One neighbour, Tina Rogers, knew that things weren’t right at the Gwynns’, yet she remained silent!  She lamented that if they needed help, they could have come to her. No, bitch. You see, you become proactive about these things. If you see something, you say something! You don’t wait for them to admit that they need help. They probably enjoyed abusing their children and didn’t see anything wrong with it. Also according to this stupid bitch, Antonio was beating on Heifer and her screams could be heard throughout the neighbourhood. Yet Tina Rogers remained silent, and now Toni’s blood is on her hands.

While authorities were investigating, Heifer and Antonio mysterious up and moved house! Why the rush, Heifer? They also failed to turn up to a Social Services meeting. Cops later found them hiding out in a relative’s trailer and charged Antonio with felony child abuse and second degree murder, and Heifer with felony child abuse. No word on whether the trailer-owning relative was charged with aiding and abetting, but personally I would have welcomed these two with open arms, made sure they were settled in nicely, lock the door and then burn the trailer to the ground in the middle of the night. Then collect the insurance money. Bail has been set for $1 million for Heifer and $3 million for Antonio. Toni’s siblings are in the care of Social Services, but an aunt has come forward to claim them. So 3 kids aged 5, 17 months and 5 months. All at the age of 22. Contraceptives, anyone? Personally I can’t believe someone had sex with THAT 3 times. Heifer should have just sat on her husband and suffocated/crushed him if she was sick of him hitting her.

Fly with the Angels, tiny Toni!

Fly with the Angels, tiny Toni!

AdminRaptor: Welcome to the Bad Breeders Internet Game Show (otherwise known as BBIGS)!

Jimmy: The game no one wants to play because contestants generally lose!

Adminraptor: I’m AdminRaptor, and tonight, along with co-host Jimmy, who is actually just a sarcastic fictional extension of myself, we have a new contestant! This is Cheryl Darlene Dudley of St. Peters, Missouri. She is 37 years old and a “mother” of two children. One child is one year old (22 months, almost 2) and the other child is seven years old. She doesn’t look too happy. Why isn’t she happy?

Jimmy: She’s sitting in jail right now on a $30,000 bond!

AdminRaptor: Indeed she is! Although that sounds a little low, doesn’t it Jimmy?
Jimmy: Very low.
AdminRaptor: Ridiculously low
Jimmy: Insanely low.
AdminRaptor: Indescribably low.
Jimmy: Lower than what I predict this woman’s IQ is.
AdminRaptor: I stand corrected.

Anyway, you’ll understand the “low” comments when I tel you what she’s n jail for. Well, it’s simple really… She tied her 22-month old (one year, almost two) child to her garage, outside, so that the child wouldn’t run out into the street.

Jimmy: I think the real reason is so the child wouldn’t run away in general from their lunatic mother.

AdminRaptor: More than likely. Police came to her house when a neighbor/witness called them reporting that a child was tied to the garage. When they got there, the child was no longer tied to the garage…But of course, Cheryl forgot rule #2 of dealing with the police during an investigation.

Jimmy: What’s rule #2?
AdminRaptor: Rule #2 is “Shut the fuck up.”
Jimmy: …What’s rule #1?
AdminRaptor: Rule #1 is “Don’t break the fucking law.”
Jimmy: Ah, good rules to abide by.

AdminRaptor: Indeed they are. But Cheryl broke rule #2 and didn’t shut the fuck up. Instead, she did admit to tying her child to the garage so that she wouldn’t run away. Then, when police searched the house, they found a loaded rifle in the one-year-old’s crib. And how did Cheryl explain that? Oh,  she heard a noise out back and grabbed her gun, set it down in the crib, and forgot that it was there.

Jimmy: Hey, that’s a legitimate excuse! I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve walked by my child’s crib and thought “Hey, that there bed would make a mighty fine gun cabinet!
AdminRaptor: Not funny.
Jimmy: Okay, how about this one: Maybe this is just some liberal conspiracy cover-up and the gun really belonged to the one-year-old and the police were just trying to deprive her of her Second Amendment rights?
AdminRaptor: What the fuck.
Jimmy: ‘MURIKA. THEY’RE TAKIN’ OUR FREEDOMS!
AdminRaptor: Rule #2 applies to this situation too, Jimmy.
Jimmy: Shutting the fuck up, now.
AdminRaptor: Good. Thank you.
Jimmy: Maybe that’ll be the headline for this case on Fox News…
AdminRaptor: JIMMY!
Jimmy: Bazinga!

AdminRaptor: Anyway, as the police continued to search. They found pills in the bedroom that was shared by the 7-year-old child, within reach of said child. Cheryl said she didn’t know what the pills were–just that they helped her sleep and she had trouble sleeping. There were also 5 dogs in the house that were removed from the home along with the children after this search. Dog feces were scattered about the house, and the basement had a number of used diapers on the floor, and things near the water heater that presented a fire hazard. There was also spoiled food in the kitchen/refrigerator, and brown smears of unknown origin in the refrigerator as well. `

Jimmy: Ew. Just. Ew.

AdminRaptor: And she is sitting in jail with a $30,000 bond with 7–SEVEN–counts of endangering the welfare of a child and 1 count of child abuse. So now you understand why Jimmy and I feel that this is a ridiculously low amount for bond. Oh, and there was physical abuse as well. Not only were flea bites and scratches found on the toddler, and bruises on her that Cheryl admitted to causing. The bathroom also looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in months as well. Oh, and the back door was always open because the glass of the door was broken. The full details can be read on the probable cause papers in the sources.

And unfortunately, I can’t think of the best way to end this blog post except to say that I hope that she is held responsible for her actions and that the children (and the dogs too) find a good home with loving families that will love and care for them like they deserve.

Jimmy: Too serious, bro.

AdminRaptor: Rule #2, Jimmy.

How long can you leave a baby in a car?

Parents charged after they ‘left baby in car OVERNIGHT after shopping trip then found him dead at lunchtime the next day’

Baby left in car for about 12 hours, parents arrested in death

Thanks go to Benighted for the tip on this one.

The title of this post is not a trick question. Nor is it a hypothesis for a sadistic experiment.

A Californian couple have been arrested and charged with one count of wilful cruelty to a child resulting in death, after they left their 4 month old baby boy in a car OVERNIGHT. Not surprisingly, drugs were also involved.

According to the police, the neglectful nincompoops Jessica Quezada (23) who is the female breeder, and her accomplice and meat swinger Israel Soto (30) who is the forgetful father, returned home from shopping on Friday afternoon with their baby in the car. They then went inside at their home in a block of flats in San Diego, without taking the baby with them. It wasn’t until lunchtime the next day, that another family member found the baby in the hot car and immediately called 911.

The baby's tomb

The baby’s tomb

Once another family member had done the dirty work of actually getting the baby out of the car, like the neglectful monsters should have done in the first place, the dopey daddy finally sprang into action and performed CPR. But it was all in vain. The little baby boy died in hospital a short time later.

At 1.30pm on that Saturday, it was 80 degrees Fahrenheit (26 degrees Celsius) outside. That car would have been an oven, with the baby being unable to free himself. He would have been hungry. He would have had a dirty nappy. Her would have been thirsty. Plus on top of all of that, he was being slowly cooked alive. The baby-broiling-breeders’ neighbours cannot believe that they would be stupid enough to leave a little baby locked in a car for 12 hours, especially in that sort of heat.

Did I mention drugs charges? Yessir, yes indeedy. Jessica Quezada has also been charged with possession of a controlled substance. Considering her, ahem, size and carriage, I highly doubt the substance was meth. It was probably pot, because it gives you insane munchies which then leads to weight gain.

Jessica Quezada contemplates mugging that cop for his donuts.

The baby broilers have 3 other uncooked children – ages 3, 2, and 1, that are now in the care of DCF. Medical examiners will determine the exact cause of their baby brother’s death. The baby broilers will be expected to appear in court on Wednesday.

RIP little baby boy.

Ruthie Bell “Allegedly” Leaves Kids Home Alone With A Lighter… And You Can Guess The Rest

Unrelated: Allegedly is a good word. I’m just sayin’. Remember, all these people are guilty until proven innocent, erm… Innocent until proven guilty. Though some work harder at proving their alleged innocence/guilt than others.

Note: Sources at the bottom. That’s just how I generally put blog posts together and if you don’t like that, let me know!

Warning: Angry Sarcasm Ahead.

It should be obvious not to leave young children at home without supervision. It should be even more obvious not to do so when said young children have access to something that they can use to make fire. But as we all know from reading this “Bad Breeders” blog, the obvious (not to mention common sense) concepts are not understood or are ignored by some people. In fact, they wouldn’t get those concepts if they were beaten in the face with them–or a brick, even. I like the brick idea.

Ruthie Lee Bell, 27, of Wichita, Kansas sits in jail now on a $75,000 bond for three counts of aggravated endangerment of a child. Now, I know that you’re wondering what the hell happened, but from not only my introduction, but the title of this post, you probably have a pretty solid idea of what came to be–but I’ll give you the details anyway. Nosy bastards. But that’s okay because I’m a nosy bastard too, else I would not have put this post together. So let me give you the timeline:

Ruthie Lee Bell

Ruthie Lee Bell

Thursday, July 11, 2013. Time: No Idea O’Clock

Ruthie leaves her home, leaving her three girls–ages 4, 6, and 7–hoe alone to do I-Couldn’t-Care-Less. Obviously it was so important that she couldn’t take the kids, and that it was worth risking their lives to go do whatever-the-frack she had to do. Probably grocery shopping. That sounds like something worth risking a child’s life over, right? Right?

Thursday, July 11, 2013: Time: Around 7pm

Ja’kara Tiora Lashon Dickson–the 6-year-old–was playing with a lighter that she managed to obtain. It is reported that she was in the bathroom, lighting some trash on fire. At some point, her clothing caught fire and she ran into a bedroom, removing her clothes and putting them on the bed. The bed caught fire and it quickly spread around the house. The smoke alarms went off. Luckily, neighbors heard the smoke alarms and came outside to see smoke coming from the house. 911 was called. Children could be heard screaming. When one tried to go through front door, it was locked so she went to the back and heard children screaming that they could not get out. Another neighbor said he heard terrible screams, and that one child was screaming about her sisters.

Firefighters showed up and got the children out of the house. Just as they were being loaded into ambulances, Ruthie arrived, driving through the front yards of neighbors and over a hose being used by the firefighters and got out of her vehicle screaming for her children. Why she was not arrested at that time is not known. She was arrested for unrelated charges along with child abandonment between July 11 and July 21, but was released on bond.

Two children, the 4-year-old and 7-year-old were released from the hospital the night that they came in, one having minor injuries and the other not harmed at all. Ja’kara remained in the hospital in critical condition having suffered from severe burns. The two children that were released were released to protective police custody.

A third child, a one-year-old boy, is removed from Ruthie’s (the family’s) care in connection with the house fire. So that leaves three children in protective custody, and one child dead. This is just… Beyond sad. I hope the children stay safe.

Monday, July 22, 2013

Ruthie Bell, who had been arrested prior and was released on bond, was again arrested–this time charged with three counts of child endangerment and has a bond of $75,000.

Edit/Update: Thanks to “LoveMybabies” for sending a picture of a source for Ruthie Lee Bell’s photo to be added!

A child is dead because of Ruthie Lee Bell’s actions. And while I truly think that this was not intended–was an accident, the fact is that Ruthie left these children at home with no one old enough to supervise them. I am (obviously) angry. She didn’t ask a neighbor to watch her children while she went to do whatever-the-hell-she-did. She didn’t get anyone to do that. And as if that wasn’t bad enough (and might not necessarily be so bad if this next fact didn’t exist), she did not remove any and all lighters from the access of these children. What else, I wonder, did these children have access to? So much was on Ruthie’s shoulders regarding prevention of this tragedy, and she neglected to prevent it. Surely she knew there was a lighter in the house? Regardless, the point still stands that one shouldn’t leave young children home alone without adult or responsible supervision (I add that last bit because a 16-year-old, as an example,  isn’t an adult, but could still be responsible supervision of the young children).

And this isn’t the only case in which she got in trouble regarding the welfare of her children. In 2010 she was pulled over for driving with a suspended license and also ticketed for a child not wearing a seat belt.

I am thankful for the neighbors though, who heard the smoke alarm going off and saw the smoke and called 911. One of the first ones to notice mentioned that it was lucky that she was able to hear it, as she was downstairs in her home with the T.V. on and it was a very faint sound from where she was. But she is thankful, as I am, that she was able to hear it. This situation could have ended with even more tragedy. All of the children could have died.

Rest in peace, Ja’kara.

Edit: Here is a picture of the inmate information and charges since the link will no longer work once she is not in the Sedgewick County Jail. If I use jail info sources again, I’ll try to remember to post a screencap since it will change/no longer exist after a while.

Baby machine accused of starving 4 year old daughter

Mother of nine accused of starving 4-year-old daughter who weighted just 18 pounds

Held: Mother-of-nine Antonia Benitez has been accused of starving her 4-Year-old daughter

Antonia Benitez

Antonia Benitez (35) of Santa Ana, CA, allegedly starved her 4 year old daughter so badly that she only weighed 18 pounds (8.16 kg). Then she dumped her at a hospital and drove off. Doctors reported the girl’s malnourishment to Social Services and the baby machine was picked up by the 5.0. The little girl also had an infected wound on her leg that was going untreated.

Baby machine? What does that refer to? You see, Ms. Benitez has 9 children and is raising them all by herself. Perhaps she had that many children, she forgot to feed the 4 year old. This probably seems likely, since baby machine took the little girl to hospital before, in 2007, for being underweight. But somehow, this managed to escape the attention of the police.

Baby factory has had three felony child abuse charges filed against her. If she is convicted, she could face a maximum term of 14 years in prison. Her children are now in the care of Social Services and family members.

Here’s a pro-tip: Shut your fucking legs. You don’t have to have a baby every time you have sex. You also don’t have to have a baby with every man that you sleep with. Contraception is widely available and cheap. Don’t have more children than what you can look after. If you don’t want a tribe of children, wrap it up or pop The Pill.

Here’s an amusing little rhyme: There was an old woman who lived in a shoe; She had so many children, her cunt fell off.

Thanks to Benighted for the tip.

Clayden’s Injuries Were “The Worst Thing I’ve Ever Seen In My Life” Says Pediatric Surgeon

(Sources posted at the end of this article)

This is a particularly sad post. While I pride myself in trying to lighten things, provide humor, or just having sarcastic relief, this is not possible in this post. There is no joy. All I have is anger and sadness. This happened in my home town in Kansas, and one of the murderers of this child was in my high school graduating class. I had a feeling then that she wouldn’t be the most successful person in the world, but what was to come just one year after graduation was far worse than anything I could have imagined.

Here is little Clayden, happy as can be.

Here is little Clayden, happy as can be.

Let me introduce you to Clayden Lee Urbanek. He is–was–a fourteen-month old healthy little boy, whom his family cherished. He was nicknamed “Clay Baby”, and his father (Jorden Urbanek) said that Clayden’s coming into the world made his life better, happier. He loved his little boy. But after he and Clayden’s mother, Brittney Betzold, broke up when Clayden was around 6 months old, Jorden only got to see his son on the weekends. When he was with his son, he’d take him on trips and Jorden worked on cars and said that Clayden seemed to be interested in that. Sometimes, Clayden would go “vroom vroom”, Jorden reminisced.

September 25, 2011 was the last day that Jorden Urbanek would see his son smiling, happy, healthy, and unharmed. On September 30, when he got to see Clayden, Clayden had a gauze on his foot and Brittney told him that a knife had fallen and landed on his foot. Perhaps it was because there was little or no abuse prior, that this did not arouse suspicion. Later, Brittney would tell an officer that saw the gauze pad on his foot that she and her son were “playing mummy.”

This is Jorden and Marley, the 6-week old Belgian puppy that he got for Clayden.

In anticipation for Clayden’s next visit, Jorden got a 6-week old Belgian shepherd puppy for Clayden and couldn’t wait to introduce Marley (the puppy) to Clayden. But Clayden Lee Urbanek would never get the chance to meet Marley.

The next weekend, when Jorden was supposed to have Clayden over, Brittney told him that the child would not be visiting him that weekend because he was staying with an aunt. And there was very little contact between the two during this time, which wasn’t all that unusual. Brittney was working at a local factory and was working many hours. She and Clayden were living with her boyfriend, Antonio Brown.

October 4, 2011. Paramedics rush to the home of Brittney and Antonio after Brittney calls 911 in hysterics. When the ambulance arrived, Clayden was lying on the floor, pale and cold to the touch. He was rushed to the Salina hospital, but then transferred to a larger hospital in Wichita, and it was there, on that very day, that Clayden Lee Urbanek died.

What happened? Clayden had so many injuries to his small body. There was so much bruising all over his body that had to have taken place over the span of days–during the time that no other family members knew what was going on or had contact with Brittney. Medical professionals described Clayden’s injuries as the worst that they had ever personally seen regarding child abuse cases. Some of the bruising that he had was caused by enough force that it would have been similar to Clayden having been in a car accident–and he never was. A pediatric surgeon said that the extent of Clayden’s injuries was so severe that even none of the surgeons had seen anything like it.

“It was the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life”, said one pediatric surgeon.

And emergency surgery had to be performed on Clayden’s distended abdomen (caused by something being knocked against it and/or Clayden being kicked–it was estimated to be about 10 blows/kicks), and 12 inches of his intestines had died and had to be removed. There were also three other internal tears causing significant bleeding that had to be repaired. Despite resuscitation attempts, he died a mere 45 minutes after the surgery. And though the abdominal injuries that little Clayden suffered were the ultimate cause of death, his entire body was covered in deep bruises and scrapes. It was reported that the bruises on his buttocs were a deep purple, and then turned black and there was visible tissue damage around one inch deep.

In just a few short days (the more serious injuries happening within 24 hours of his death), Clayden suffered at least 60 bruises/scrapes on his head and neck (12 being on his scalp), 26 external injuries to his abdomen/torso and then another 20 injuries on his limbs. This was reported by the person who performed the autopsy on Clayden, and she admits that this is a conservative (small) estimate as there were so many injuries to this poor child.

Both Brittney and Antonio were arrested and tried for murder in the first degree, along with a slew of other charges, such as child endangerment and failing to protect the child.

They day that Clayden died, Antonio Brown called Jorden Urbanek and told him to go to the hospital because something bad had happened and he told Jorden that he loved Clayden and never and would never hit him. But all of the facts say otherwise. He is currently awaiting sentencing after having escaped the Saline County jail for a few days before being apprehended and is facing a charge for that as well. I can only hope that he never gets out of prison. As for Brittney, she was sentenced to 13 years for second-degree murder rather than first-degree murder. 13 years for helping to destroy her own flesh and blood, ripping apart a family, and denying her child all of the experiences that he will never have–graduation, first date, maybe even marriage and children. Clayden will never have these experiences. His last days in this life were Hell on Earth, caused by those who were supposed to protect and love him most.

Rest in peace, dear Clayden Lee Urbanek.
