A roach infested trailer is not a clown car

Not the trailer in question

Not the trailer in question

I’ve had fun at the expense of people who live in trailers in the past. To be honest I’ve been in some trailers that would put a lot of homes to shame. Unfortunately this is not the case in this story and this is what tends to perpetuate the trailer park stereotype.

Recently in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, SEVEN people were arrested on child abuse charges after investigators allegedly found FIFTEEN children living in the trailer under squalid conditions. For the mathematically challenged that’s TWENTY-TWO people living in one trailer. Even if it’s a double wide that is some pretty crowded conditions.

With seven adults living in the ‘home’ you would think that they could all pitch in together and keep the place reasonably clean. You would also be wrong. According to reports the place was covered in roaches, the pre-requisite animal feces and that the kids were swimming in an above ground pool filled with algae. All 15 kids were taken into protective custody by DSS.

To perpetuate the stereotype even further there was this little tidbit within the article…

Lt. Kevin Bobo said one man’s ex-girlfriend and current girlfriend were living in the home. Investigators said one woman’s husband and ex-boyfriend were also living in the home.

The only way this situation could have been any more trailer trashy is if they also had a meth lab.

Seven people are charged with unlawful neglect of children in this case:

Cherie Rose Toney
Aaron Eugene Dodson
Andy Lee Dunbar
David Russell Hayes
Brianna Hope Henderson
Karen Lynn Dunbar
Cindy A. Cox

Obituary for Quinten

I happened upon this story, as I tend to do when I trawl the ‘net for other things. I shared a link with Trench, who then offered me a CNN news link. Unfortunately, this seems to be the only “legit” news link I have come across, which is very sad. We have had to rely on all the sites that Quinten’s sister have published on to get more information. There are photos of the living conditions that the boys were forced to endure, plus photos of Quinten and his brother Cameron.

This story is about a sister, Valerie Wood-Harber, who was brave enough to blow the whistle on the poor living conditions to which her bio breeder Michael Wood had subjected her younger brothers Cameron and Quinten. She alleges that all the housework and care of Quinten was foisted upon young Cameron. You see, Quinten has a ring chromosome disorder which caused him to be unable to care for himself, use the toilet, feed himself, walk or talk. Instead of Mr. Wood caring for his son like he should have done, it is alleged that he just gave up and allowed Quinten to become gravely ill without seeking medical help for him. It is on a grubby, pee stained couch that Quinten died at the age of 15 years, holding the hand of his best friend and brother Cameron.

When Cameron told Valerie of the poor living conditions, as well as physical and emotional abuse that their own father was subjecting them to, she made a difficult yet sensible decision – she called Child Welfare Services and sang like a canary. They promised her that they would do a home study and that everything would be okay. Three weeks passed, and nothing was done. Valerie tried her damnedest to clean the trailer up and buy food for the boys. It was all in vain. The trailer would be exactly the same way when she returned the next time. The fridge would be empty again. Cameron told her that if it weren’t for her buying groceries, they would probably starve.

Valerie had taken the boys in after a mere three days of discovering that they existed, when their father took off to work overseas. She looked after them for 4 years, right up until Quinten started having issues with living with a “stranger” and Cameron needing his dad. Valerie did not have the time nor the resources to get the boys the help they needed, so with a heavy heart, she sent them back to their dad. She couldn’t have known that this decision would have cost Quinten his life. She had begged her father to let her take the boys until he got back on his feet, but he allegedly threatened her with never seeing the boys again if she implied that he was anything less than a good father to them. He would also have her charged with kidnapping, and because she lived in the next state, it would have been a felony.

Michael Wood is currently free from prosecution, as there had been NO investigation made by social services. Quinten’s death was officially caused by pneumonia, which the coroner blamed on his ring chromosome condition. Quinten was scrawny and malnourished, but again that was blamed on his condition.

Valerie is working around the clock to see her father brought to justice and to see Oklahoma Social Services investigated for their role in Quinten’s death.

I took offence to the poor reporting skills of the journo who wrote the CNN article. It barely touched on the accusations of child abuse made by Valerie and basically made it out to be a sob story. However, it does provide more opportunities to feel contempt for Michael Wood. According to the article, Wood claimed that Quentin suffered from recurrent ear infections which antibiotics could not clear. Valerie states that Quentin never became sick when in her care. He also claimed that he went to DHS for help with Quentin (um, your daughter offered to take the boys and you nearly bit her head off with threats of kidnapping charges). DHS declined to comment on whether there was any record of Wood visiting DHS. He even went as far as to blame his imaginary friend God for Quinten’s death. No sir. You kept them in a hovel, you didn’t buy any food and you rejected your daughter’s pleas to take better care of the boys. This is squarely on you.

It is so sad that there wasn’t much more on news sites and that I had to rely on unofficial new sights. Valerie is trying hard to get her brother’s story told, and I hope by putting it on BB, that it will help.

RIP Quinten Douglas Wood.

Kids “home alone” in rotting caravan

Couple charged after children found in chained/padlocked camper in Suffolk

NewsChannel 3 looks inside trailer where police say kids were found in horrible living conditions

A pair of not-so-happy campers

A pair of not-so-happy campers

Thanks to Muggle for the tip on this one. Before we begin, the terminology in this story will differ. As an Australian, I use the term “caravan” to describe what the Yanks call a “camper”. But when I hear the term “trailer”, I also think of that as being a “caravan” (but a bigger one). When I was growing up, we had a holiday home in the NSW Southern Highlands. Admittedly it was a caravan/camper that was old and rickety, but it was 7 metres (22 ft) long. That’s what I think of when I see the word “trailer”.

Two children were found alone by police in a chained and padlocked caravan in the backyard of a house in Suffolk VA. According to reports, the 2 year old girl and the 6 month old boy were left alone in conditions that were no less than foul. There were shitty nappies strewn about, the beds were covered in pee and crap, the upholstery was infested with fleas and the floorboards were rotting out from under their feet. A news crew reported that when they opened up the trailer, a wave of garbage stink hit them. There were flies clinging to dirty dishes in the sink. The caravan had all the windows boarded up, no air conditioning, and the only power source was an extension cord plugged into the caravan’s electrical inlet.

While police were sorting out the youngsters, who should come moseying along? None other than Jaronda Wilson (23) and her salami swinger. They had gone to the store for some beer and said that they had left Wilson’s brother in law Laron Huston Neal (22) in charge of the children. This was true, but Neal had better things to do than hang out in a smelly old caravan, so he put an egg in his shoe and beat it.

The poor little tackers were covered in mosquito bites and the baby boy had bronchitis, probably from living in a confined space with piss and shit everywhere.

Jaronda and Laron were arrested and charged with abuse and neglect, reckless disregard and cruelty to children. Along with those two, the police arrested Kimberly Shelton (20) for assault, after she beat up another woman so that she could be initiated into a gang. When the police showed up to arrest Kim, that’s when they found the locked caravan.

The owner of the house and caravan, Marvin Askew, claims to not know anything about the conditions of the caravan or that there were children living there. He reckons that his son lived in there and that occasionally he had friends over. Well, Marvin, it’s time to pull your head out of your arse and look around. How could you not know there was something going on? Kids cry and play and stuff, plus people coming and going regularly. It’s time to get your son to clean up the horrific mess that his whore made, and then boot him the fuck out. It’s time he made it in the real world and stopped leaching off Daddy. Maybe if he stopped buying so much beer, he’d have enough money to move out.

The kids were taken into the custody of CPS, where they received medical treatment and were released to their grandfather. Hopefully the gene that made Jaronda enjoy living in filth is just a throwback, and not a family history thing.

(I think I detect a hint of meth-face in Laron, at right)

I put home alone in quotation marks, because that ain’t no home for kids.
